The American Farmland Trust is conducting the America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest and the Pepper Place Farmers Market is on the list to consider from Alabama. They’re inviting folks to “Let the world know you love your local farmers market” by voting. If you want to add any of the other farmers markets in the metro Birmingham area (or the state of Alabama) we think they wouldn’t mind. Plus, you help others know just how many options we’ve got around here too…

Election ’09: We’ve got a date!
We learned yesterday that this year’s municipal elections in Birmingham will take place on August 25. The Birmingham Election Commission set the elections for City Council and the school board after it received approval from the U.S. Department of Justice last week. The decision means that we’ll be voting on the same day as much of the rest of the state this year.
We’re aware of several people who’ve already declared themselves as candidates in this year’s City Council races; we’ve even heard a few rumbles about the folks thinking about running for the school board seats.
Who do you know who’s announced their intentions to run?

Grocery tax bill vote at 4 p.m.
There’s been a great deal of discussion about Alabama House Bill 116 (including this blog post), the bill that would removing the 4% Alabama state grocery tax while making up for the projected loss in revenue by discontinuing the federal income tax deduction from state income taxes.
Well, we just learned through Twitter (h/t @scottcolecfp) that the bill is being reconsidered at 4 p.m. TODAY! Whether you are for or against the bill, now would be a good time to call your representatives in Montgomery and let them know what you think. The main switchboard # is 334.832.9060.
Hopefully we’ll be able to share what happens with you later on this evening.

Nope, we’re still going digital on Feb. 17
… at least for now. A bill that would have delayed the switch from analog to digital television until June 12 did not get the votes necessary for passage in the House of Representatives earlier today. This is after the Senate had unanimously approved it on Monday evening. So for the time being, we’ve only got 20 days left to enjoy Fox 6’s FM simulcast on 87.7 FM.
Help Nena and Ellie be recognized nationally
We’ve just learned about what you might call the American Idol of therapy dog awards. One of Hand In Paw‘s therapy teams, Nena Moon and her dog Ellie, are one of only five finalist teams from around the country competing for the Pet Partners category of the Beyond Limits Awards. It’s presented by The Delta Society, the international organization that registers professionally trained therapy teams. The winner is chosen by popular vote on the Society’s website. There’s a video on the website of Nena and Ellie in action at UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center (it’s the last one). So go, check it out and vote once a week through Feb. 7 (with one vote per ISP) and then tell your firends.

Where to go next?
That’s what local blogger Grammaticaster is asking for help with figuring out. After checking out this post about the situation over on Warum Ich Bin v3.0, you’ll want to pick one of the choices available in the top left hand corner of the site or offer a suggestion in the comments section. We’re pretty sure he’ll appreciate the assistance.
Sweet reasons to vote
It’s our civic duty. One that we at the Terminal highly encourage. And while it feels good to be a part of the political process, there’s a better reason to vote today — yummy ice cream.
So grab your “I Voted” sticker and proudly wear it to either The Summit or Patton Creek locations of Ben & Jerry’s from 5-8 p.m. for your free scoop. Both locations are participating in the giveaway. Earlier in the day, you can get a free tall cup of joe from Starbucks. Then drive over to Krispy Kreme for a free star-shaped doughnut to enjoy with that coffee. Now, the guy we spoke to at the Hoover location say he didn’t think they were participating, but the guy at the 1st Avenue North location said the offer is being made at all stores. So sure bets are East Lake and Midfield. Enjoy!
