UPDATE: Fice and Ice under wraps, for now

Fire and Ice under wraps. Andre Natta/bhamterminal.com

We’re really not weren’t sure what the deal is was ourselves. There’d been a lot of searches recently including the words “Fire and Ice“, “Birmingham” and “what happened” bringing folks to the website so we headed over to Five Points South where we took the above photo.

The windows were covered in paper though there were no signs explaining what was going on. Comments to the restaurant’s fan page on Facebook suggest that this has been the case since October 10. Emails have been sent to the local corporate offices with no answer or voicemail available when phoned. The restaurant opened in March of 2008.

What we did learn was that the restaurant is having improvements made that should be complete in time for a December reopening, so those who enjoy the restaurant shouldn’t be worried about them closing.

Follow-up: Johnny Ray’s president joins the conversation

We’ve seen a great deal of traffic over the last few days with regard to our post about the future of Johnny Ray’s. We’re hoping that some of you have had a chance to read the comments. If not, you’ve missed out on something…

One person who we were happy to see respond to the comments was Alton Shields, the President and Managing Director of the Johnny Ray Cos, who was able to quiet rumors that the chain was closing.

We just wanted to take a moment and suggest that folks check out his comments and all of the other comments to all of the other posts on the site whenever and wherever they’re made.

Thanks those that do add their voices to this conversation.

Farewell, Johnny Ray’s

johnnyrayslogoThe word out in the Twitterverse that yesterday was your last chance to enjoy food from Johnny Ray’s – at least as we knew it. The current owners of the 55 year old local barbecue chain have decided to retire with different plans being made for all of the existing locations.

The chatter online has been sparse, though it was apparent that the changes were expected, though some early moves left folks unsure.

Thanks to @bmcgraw for the heads up on the news about the local franchise.

It’s tough to find a chef sometimes

In late March, we came close to having a former employee of Frank Stitt’s Bottega running a new Southern cuisine restaurant in Washington D.C.’s Shaw Neighborhood. Well, we were close.

eatonville-logoEatonville is now open but Chris Newsome is not serving as its executive chef. Only 10 days into his new job, his boss decided that he wasn’t necessarily the right fit. Check out this story recently published in Washington City Paper to learn what happened. You can also check out the website for the restaurant, named for author Zora Neale Hurston‘s hometown Eatonville, FL, and the process used to determine who would serve as executive chef via videos.

McCafe is coming to Birmingham

Driving down 1st Avenue North in Woodlawn away from downtown and looking off to your left just before you drive under I 20/59 will have you checking out the recently rebuilt McDonald’s (it’s been a while too since it re-opened, so don’t feel too bad if you didn’t notice it before).

mccafe-bhamWhat you may not have noticed was the signage on the building announcing that it would soon become one of the metro area locations for McDonald’s latest foray into staying relevant in the fast food world – McCafé. We’re not sure how many more locations are preparing to open in metro Birmingham, but just the fact that we’ve got one is pretty cool. If you do know of others, add their locations to the comments section.

“A sad day for hot dog fans”

That is how one commenter on the Birmingham News‘ breaking new blog described learning the news that Tony’s Terrific Hot Dogs will be closing after 29 years in business next weekend. According to the piece, Tony Ippolito’s looking forward to retirement, though it looks like many are going to miss out on the food.

Lights dim on The Anchorage

Full house at the Anchorage on it's last day in business on TwitPicJust a reminder that today’s the last day for The Anchorage in downtown Homewood. While it has been reported that the restaurant was closing at the end of October, the lease expired on September 1. Rumors of a relocation to Edgewood are said to be not true, so if you want to enjoy it one last time, today’s apparently the day. Some folks are sharing their feelings about the decsion in their own way
