A second Walmart potentially looming for Montclair Rd?

Modified from Union vs Wal Mart in Las Vegas #2. Brave New Films/Flickr According to the email sent in to The35212 and shared on the community news site earlier today, Baptist Health System wants to split land located across from the current Trinity Medical Center complex between two developers. The health system sold controlling interest in the hospital, most recently known as Montclair Baptist, back in 2005 with the remaining sold in 2008.

The developers in turn plan to build an upscale apartment complex on one portion of the property and a Walmart Neighborhood Market on the other. It would be the fourth location for the chain’s market concept store in metro Birmingham, with others in Centerpoint, Vestavia Hills and Homewood.

The Bentonville, AR-based retailer already has a Supercenter located a little more than 2 miles away (also on Montclair Road) serving as an anchor tenant for the Eastwood Village shopping complex. That location contains a grocery store. There’s also a Sam’s Club located four additional miles down the road in Irondale on Grants Mill Road.

The hospital complex and the surrounding property has been the focus of much attention from surrounding neighborhoods, civic leaders and concerned citizens due to Trinity’s pending move to the former HealthSouth digital hospital site.

On the agenda: ClasTran and neighborhoods

Official flag of the City of BirminghamIt’s a short Birmingham City Council agenda this morning but its impact could be incredible during this last week of 2010 (It’s only 5 pages).

Item 3 would make $121,500 from the city’s general fund available to ClasTran to help reduce a budget shortfall. This action was promised earlier this month by Mayor Bell, meaning that the city will fulfill its financial obligation. There is still some issue with what the Jefferson County Commission will do and where the additional funds will come from.

The folks in North Pratt will finally have their neighborhood election results certified by the city if Item 11 is approved this morning. Officers for all of the city’s 99 neighborhoods serve two year terms, meaning we’ll have our next set of elections in 2012. The Fountain Heights neighborhood will be able to erect a new neighborhood entrance sign 18th Street North near 16th Court North, adding to the signs popping up throughout the Magic City.

What happens? It wrapped before 10:30 a.m. so you’ll have to check out the video archive.

Norwood’s Home Tour a fun way to explore neighborhood’s past, present

How does a century-old neighborhood on the rebound in North Birmingham reintroduce itself to metro Birmingham? Similar to how new home communities advertise themselves – with a collective “open house”.

That’s the big idea behind the first annual Historic Norwood Home Tour, taking place May 2nd from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Its organizers, all neighbors, are calling it a “hard hat” tour because all of the homes included have either been totally renovated or are in the middle of that process. They hope the tour will inspire with ideas and provide first-hand tips on how to manage a home renovation.

Eleven homes will be open for tours with proceeds from ticket sales benefitting the Norwood Resource Center, a local community non-profit operating in one of Norwood’s restored homes. Local businesses are taking out ads in the tour’s guide to cover the expense for putting on the event.

McCafe is coming to Birmingham

Driving down 1st Avenue North in Woodlawn away from downtown and looking off to your left just before you drive under I 20/59 will have you checking out the recently rebuilt McDonald’s (it’s been a while too since it re-opened, so don’t feel too bad if you didn’t notice it before).

mccafe-bhamWhat you may not have noticed was the signage on the building announcing that it would soon become one of the metro area locations for McDonald’s latest foray into staying relevant in the fast food world – McCafé. We’re not sure how many more locations are preparing to open in metro Birmingham, but just the fact that we’ve got one is pretty cool. If you do know of others, add their locations to the comments section.
