Children, puppies or hipsters? You decide.

Luckie Choose Your Charity screenshotThe folks over at Birmingham, AL-based Luckie and Co. have $6,000 to give away to charity this holiday season – and they want your help to figure out how to divvy it up.

If you visit a special section of their website (click here to get there) before December 31, you can decide how the money is split up.

Your choices are puppies, children and creatives.

No, they’re not going to tell you exactly who’s getting the money until you place your vote (and we don’t know what they are either) but it’s definitely an interesting way to engage the community for the holidays.

Time to choose who reigns supreme

Birmingham's Best 2010 logo. Courtesy of The Birmingham NewsWe’ve been looking for a reason to use that headline for some time (it just doesn’t seem to be the same without The Chairman though). Anyway…

Today’s the last day for folks to nominate their favorites for The Birmingham News‘ Birmingham’s Best Readers Poll. If you’re planning to vote you’ve got to make nominations for at least 10 of the 80+ categories listed.

Don’t worry if you don’t see this until Thursday morning – come Friday they’ll share the five finalists in each of the categories and you’ll get another chance to vote again.

Incidentally today’s also the last day to vote for the finalists in this year’s Mashable Awards. There’s also still time to nominate people for the Birmingham Business Journal‘s Top 40 under 40 Awards too (until January 6 to be exact).

Think of it as a warm up for this fall’s municipal elections…

Saying hello to The Mountain!

The Mountain - official logoIt appears there were a lot of people sitting at computers across metro Birmingham at 12 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

They were all waiting to hear what the first song ever broadcast digitally by The Mountain would be. We can’t blame them; we’ve been waiting since this post appeared in early November.

By the way, it was Mountain Song by Jane’s Addiction. They’ve been praising the station via Twitter since

In the last 30+ hours we’ve seen several more pieces shared online about the new station. Matt Cuthbert over at al.com provides an overview of what got us to yesterday’s launch of the city’s latest internet-only radio station. It includes links to posts on BirminghamMommy.com and Birmingham Weekly about the effort and the first twelve songs played on the station. Bob Carlton wrote up his own overview of the station’s launch for his Birmingham News column.

But wait, there’s more…

2010 Montclair Run results are in

2010 Montclair Run logoThere were apparently many who enjoyed the warm weather on Thanksgiving Day morning and ventured over to Montclair Road to take part in the 34th annual Sam Lapidus Montclair Run. It’s a safe guess since it’s been one of the most searched for terms leading folks to the site in recent days. It only makes sense then to post the link to the official results as shared over on OnlineRaceResults.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Childhood Cancer Research Fund at Children’s Hospital and the fitness program at the Levite Jewish Community Center.

We’ve also taken the liberty of creating a PDF of the results so there’s a permanent record somewhere in town. By the way, we haven’t tested it yet, but we’re assuming that you can still “Sleep in for Sam” and make a donation to the research fund.

This is not a revolution. This is a solution.

The Mountain - official logo“The Uprising” across Birmingham, AL will soon have a web-based radio station resulting from their online revolution earlier this year.

Scott Register of Reg’s Coffee House was the last voice heard on Birmingham’s Live 100.5FM back on Valentine’s Day, despite nearly 16,000 people showed their support for the station and the format via an online campaign.

Recent activity on Facebook suggests that a web-based solution in the form of an online radio station is about to be unveiled to Alabama’s Magic City. A website has been created for The Mountain, as well as a Facebook fan page and a Twitter account.

According to the digital outposts, the new venture plans to launch later this month with mobile apps available for download for when you want to listen while out running, etc. Reg’s Coffee House is also expected to make a return to the digital airwaves.

FYI: The “issue” with Timetable is being worked on; the hope is that it will be back up and operational by the end of next week.

#bhamchat returns tonight!

A little over a year ago, we took a chance on hosting an online chat using Twitter that focused on Birmingham, AL. We had a pretty good turnout for the first one, with people sharing their opinions about current events taking place in The Magic City and information about upcoming events. It also turned out to be the first ever Twitter chat focused on a single city/metropolitan area…

Several things have changed since the last time we hosted one, including the number of people that are now on Twitter in Birmingham and those interested in this kind of a conversation. So it’s back, tonight, starting at 7 p.m. Anyone who has a Twitter account is invited to take part. We’ll be opening it up to those without an account in the coming weeks via this site.

Even if you don’t have an account, please feel free to follow along using our What the Hashtag? pagevia Twitter search or using a service like Tweetchat.

In case you’re one of our followers on Twitter and you don’t want to be potentially bombarded between 7 – 8:30 p.m. this evening, please check out muuter as an option.

Time to visit the Real Housewives of Birmingham

Real Housewives of Birmingham cover - May 2010The current issue of Real Housewives of Birmingham has been unveiled. You’ve got to click the link we just shared to check it out, since it’s an online only publication.

Its creators describe the site on its Twitter profile as a “Birmingham, AL webazine for the housewives and workwives of the metro area.”

The publication includes features and a monthly events calendar.

Last night they sent out a tweet suggesting that they wanted to collect 500 hits before Mother’s Day this weekend. It sounds like a realistic goal – and a great excuse to head on over to the site and check it out.
