A quiet problem no more

Syphilis as a major issue has been affecting Jefferson County since 2002.  In 2006, there were 238 reported cases in Jefferson County alone.  At first, you could pin point the specific areas in Jefferson County that were affected, but now it’s county wide.  Alabama is currently ranked fifth in the nation with cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia.  Jefferson County has the tenth highest number of recorded cases of syphilis in the country.

A look back: May 5

1873:

Voters in Jefferson County passed a referendum moving the county seat from Elyton to Birmingham.

2006:

Birmingham Steeldogs 63 – Louisville Fire 60 at the BJCC Arena. Christian Throwback Jerseys were worn during pre-game as part of “Faith Night”.

Soothing banks through music

JeffCoCrap.com screenshotOne resident thinks that music and bumper stickers will help ease the Jefferson County sewer debt, though in a completely different way than Birmingham city councilor William Bell’s proposal or one suggested by Jefferson County Commission president Bettye Fine Collins. This proposal calls for visitors to jeffcocrap.com to purchase bumper stickers, t-shirts and similar items, with a portion of the proceeds going to cover the principal of the county’s mounting debt. You can also check out the Jefferson County Sewer Flush over on YouTube.

We still have a feeling that it would take a long time for the money to pile up.
