Jessie’s Place, The Jimmie Hale Mission’s intermediate shelter for women and children, will be celebrating 10 years of faithful service with an open house celebration. Kurt Weill Retrospective w/Diane McNaron and Thomas Bagwell, Unitarian Universalist Church

Soprano Diane McNaron‘s Kurt Weill Retrospective, not heard in Birmingham in nearly a decade, will be presented with New York pianist Thomas Bagwell. Bagwell, a Birmingham native who has not appeared here in fifteen years, will open the program with the rare and atmospheric Berg Piano Sonata. These two consummate performers will then take the audience on a musical odyssey through the controversial lives and the turbulent times of Berlin/American composer Kurt Weill and the woman he married twice, the chanteuse Lotte Lenya.

Featuring songs from Threepenny Opera, Happy End, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, little known and expressive art songs and Broadway hits.

ONB Magic City Art Connection, Linn Park

The ONB Magic City Art Connection (MCAC) celebrates its 25^th anniversary this year. This free, outdoor art exhibition festival will take place in Linn Park in downtown Birmingham.

Recognized as one of the 12 best art shows in the country, MCAC features artists from all over the country exhibiting and selling their work. A special element to the event is the Imagination Festival for Kids, featuring over 30 interactive art workshops for children. Regular attendees will also be looking forward to the annual Corks and Chefs tasting event. We’ll add additional information about it as it becomes available.

Know Your Money, Birmingham Urban League

Know Your Money is an economic empowerment program designed to teach 21-40 year old African and Latino American professionals personal money management strategies.

The program consists of a three (3) class curriculum to help participants understand their attitudes about money, establish a household budget and manage financial tools. The program is sponsored by the National Urban League, in partnership with Honda Financial Services.

Participants are required to attend 2 out of the 3 sessions in order graduate from the program.

1040 Fest, 24th Street and 3rd Avenue North

The IRS tax deadline is approaching, and that means it’s time for 1040 Fest.

The event is an annual music festival sponsored by Birmingham’s Central City Neighborhood Association & held across the street from the city’s downtown post office each year on tax day.

The residents and their event partners take advantage of the branch’s extended hours (due to the many late filers) and the media coverage that follows because of it to show off just how great the downtown area is to be in.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, food and drink… and their tax returns if they haven’t filed them yet
