McCafe is coming to Birmingham

Driving down 1st Avenue North in Woodlawn away from downtown and looking off to your left just before you drive under I 20/59 will have you checking out the recently rebuilt McDonald’s (it’s been a while too since it re-opened, so don’t feel too bad if you didn’t notice it before).

mccafe-bhamWhat you may not have noticed was the signage on the building announcing that it would soon become one of the metro area locations for McDonald’s latest foray into staying relevant in the fast food world – McCafĂ©. We’re not sure how many more locations are preparing to open in metro Birmingham, but just the fact that we’ve got one is pretty cool. If you do know of others, add their locations to the comments section.

wOOt! Foodimentary wins a “Shorty”

food24Kudos to Foodimentary, a blog and Twitter feed based right here in metro Birmingham, AL (Homewood to be exact) as they are the winner of this year’s Shorty Award for food! The Shortys recognize leaders in producing short content using the popular microblogging site. Here’s a video primer for those not familar with Twitter.

Wondering just how popular and powerful Twitter can be? Foodimentary’s profile currently provides fun facts about food to more than 29,600 followers!

We don’t know if they’ll be able to attend tomorrow’s awards ceremony, but we hope they are able to, considering that CNN’s Rick Sanchez will be hosting with tweeters Shaquille O’Neal and MC Hammer being involved in the fun.

Congrats!

Urban Standard’s got a website

Those of you that have been wondering when Urban Standard would launch a website, they just have!

They’ve quietly launched urbanstandard.net and will upload some more information in the coming weeks, including their performance calendar (a stage has already been installed by the front window of the coffee house) and a photo gallery. What’s great for most folks is the fact that they now have an online detailed edition of their menu.

Head on over and check it out!

A great excuse

So while it’s not the main reason that we were quiet yesterday, it’s a great excuse to use. The staff and I were enjoying some hot dogs from Pete’s (OK, maybe I was enjoying a hot dog from Pete’s so I wouldn’t get anyone sick…) with it being National Hot Dog Day and all. We’ve asked about your favorite hot dog places before, leading to some interesting comments … so you can either add your favorite to the list here or answer today’s Magic City Question about Mayor Langford’s “top secret” plan over here.

Tough choice, huh?

New hours at Urban Standard

No, we’re not kidding. Beginning tomorrow, Urban Standard (address & location) will be open until 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We’ll leave you to your rejoicing now…

Oh yeah, since you’ve probably read most of the other writeups on the coffee house, we thought you’d enjoy seeing what Samford’s student newspaper had to say about Urban Standard back in May.

Nonna’s closing it’s doors tonight

Early this morning we received an email saying that Nonna’s in Vestavia City Center will be closing its doors for good this evening. Michael Glaser, local drummer and member of the ensemble jazz group Mingusphere, shared the news with members of his email list about the Italian restaurant. The restaurant’s website is no longer up either. Sad news for fans of the restaurant and fans of the regular jazz performances as well.

Because we don’t want you to be hungry

Krispy Kreme glazedWhy else would we make sure that you know about free ice cream day and free pancake day? Today we’re making sure you know about free doughnut day. The first Friday in June is always National Doughnut Day. Really, I’m not making this up. Head to your nearest Krispy Kreme (here are the metro area locations) and pick up a chocolate glazed or raspberry-filled treat. It’s your choice. And because those doughnuts are made hot and fresh all day long, don’t worry that you missed out on breakfast. You can stop by for an afternoon snack or make it your lunch. We’re not judging, just enjoying.
