[...] So while it’s not the main reason that we were quiet yesterday, it’s a great excuse to use. The staff and I were enjoying some hot dogs from Pete’s (OK, maybe I was enjoying a hot dog from Pete’s so I wouldn’t get anyone sick…) with it being National Hot Dog Day and all. We’ve asked about your favorite hot dog places before, leading to some interesting comments … so you can either add your favorite to the list here or answer today’s Magic City Question about Mayor Langford’s “top secret” plan over he…. Am I to understand that Mayor Langford wishes to catapult us into the 21st century by transforming our over-crowed streets and traffic congestion into a sleek, modern day trolley system, complete with in the streets rails and overhead wires like around 1873ish?

And you mean to tell me he wants to dig up our streets, run overhead wires all over downtown and up and down every main thoroughfare at a cost of only 31 MILLION dollars for THREE trolley cars to jettison future citizens rapidly to and fro places not of our concern to eliminate snarls and jams and gladly place all citizens at their appointed destinations within a predestined time schedule?

No freaking wonder he’s trying to keep it a secret.

A trolley? Overhead wires? In ground rails? 3 trolleys? 31 million dollars?

Sure, why not…. count me in. But I would like to add that I think we may need more trolley cars when the Olympic fans and athletes get here…. just saying…. something to consider.

I think the trolley line he’s proposing is just a short link between the transit station and the BJCC. This would of course overlap the area covered by the proposed Bus Rapid Transit studied by the In-Town Transit Partnership, but such is life in Birmingham.

I do think the site plans in there look pretty terrible. The fair park proposal looks like an old-school mall, surrounded by parking lots. Is that what the residents of West End want? I notice sidewalks skirt the perimeter, but don’t lead in to the retail at all. This project would put the neighborhood in worse shape. It is too pedestrian unfriendly, and it is poor urban design.

The new municipal complex doesn’t look much better, and the funding mechanism isn’t really appealing either. His showmanship, on the other hand, is pretty entertaining.
