It’s National Hot Dog Day!

July 18th, 2007 by Andre Natta · 8 Comments

It’s actually the 50th anniversary of National Hot Dog Day, introduced to us by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1957. According to their official website (yes, we’re serious), more than 2.3 billion franks will be eaten this July, which is actually National Hot Dog Month.

We here in Birmingham are pretty picky about our hot dogs, whether it’s the "special sauce" or the Grapico or Coke that goes along with our dogs.

Where’s your favorite place to go grab a hot dog (or 3) and why?

So which one do you like to go to and why is it?: BTW - mine’s Pete’s Famous mainly because I just think the space is cool (as are the dogs).

I prefer my hotdogs at baseball games. A dog or a brat, a frosty beverage, and Barons playing, what a great combination!

As you know, Pete’s Famous is owned by Gus. Incidentally, there is a Gus’s Hot Dogs three blocks away. And his name isn’t Gus.
There is also Lyric, and Tony’s Terrific.
Oh yea, by the way, it’s also National Ice Cream month. Sunday was National Ice Cream day. My favorite place for ice cream in Birmingham is any of those marble slab creamery type places.

Gus’s is my favorite. Alot friendlier service there than you’ll get at Pete’s in my opinion. Pete’s has a good dog though, but the old staple of Sneaky Petes runs a close second to Gus’s in my book.

Don’t forget about Marylins (sp?) over behind the courthouse.

Outside of Birmingham area they don’t know what “sauce” is. Everyone talks about the Varsity over in Atlanta but they don’t even compare. Pink hot dogs? blasphemy.

A post about hot dogs get’s the most comments…. go figure.

    I simply LOVE hotdogs!
My 2 favorite hotdog places are:
    1. Sneaky Pete’s- love their slaw dogs
    2. The Chevron Station on Highland- love their special 2 dogs with a bag of chips for under $3.00.
You can put as much onion, kraut and relish on them too!

This is a vote for the hot dog cart that shows up outside Innisfree/Nana Funks late-night.

Amazing dog (Nathan’s) with great chili. Mustard and relish and I’m set.

I also must push the Winky-dink @ Bottletree.
