Economic synergy focus for summit

Next week’s Economic Summit, presented by the City of Birmingham‘s economic development committee, hopes to provide the area’s public, private and non-profit leaders with the tools necessary to guide the Magic City region through the current economic crisis. The event is free and open to the public and will include keynote speeches by John Sibley Butler, Ph.D., director of The Kelleher Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Texas at Austin and Kim M. Williams, Ph.D., associate professor of public policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. New Good People brew debuts at Harvest Brew

The post title pretty much tells the story. 9 Numbers is reporting that Good People Brewing Company will be introducing an Oatmeal Stout tomorrow evening at Homewood’s Harvest Brew event. Tria Market’s blog has all of the pertinent information on this Oktoberfest celebration beginning at 5 p.m.According to the 9 Numbers post, it’s a limited release, so if you don’t get it tomorrow, you’ll want to get on over to the J. Clyde and Five Points Grill next week.

While we’re at it, the folks at Good People are asking folks to become fans of their page on Facebook instead of becoming friends with their profile.

New biofuels corridor almost complete

Last night the I-65 Biofuels Corridor Summit at Ted’s Garage provided attendees with a chance to learn more the completion of the first cross-country route that allows owners of FlexFuel vehicles easy access to E85 fuel from Mobile, AL to Gary, IN (where events will be held tomorrow evening). One of those stations is the Shell station located at the intersection of I-65 and U.S. 31 in Vestavia Hills. Earlier today public officials attended a ceremony marking it’s designation as one of seven (7) stations offering E85 along the north/south thoroughfare. Drivers that visit that station today, provided your car can run on E85, will be able to fill up on the alternative fuel for $2.85/gallon.

Drink beer, help environment… sweet!

Next time you’re out and about, look for the fish. SweetWater Brewing Company has teamed up with local bars here and in Tuscaloosa to declare October Save the Black Warrior month. Participating businesses will be selling paper fish for $1 and $5 as well as special edition T-shirts. Funds raised will support Black Warrior Riverkeeper‘s river patrol and water quality monitoring programs.

Kick-off for the Birmingham campaign is 10 p.m. tonight at Zydeco in Southside. Tickets are $10 at the door. The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker will headline. The campaign’s Tuscaloosa kick-off event will be at 9:30 pm on Oct. 16 at Jupiter Bar and Grill with the Athens, Ga., reggae pioneers Dubconscious.

A rally for green jobs

This weekend dozens of people gathered in front of the Alabama Environmental Council‘s (AEC) Recycling  Center downtown to do their part in showing our government and our Presidential candidates that they were ready for the country to focus on the creation of green jobs in support of a green economy. The gathering was part of Green Jobs Now – A Day To Build The New Economy, one of the largest days of citizen action focusing on economic issues and global warming in our nation’s history.

Learn Who’s Who in Black Birmingham

Tonight some of the city’s most prominent African American leaders will be gathering tonight at the Birmingham Museum of Art to learn who’s been highlighted in the latest edition of Who’s Who in Black Birmingham. The event starts at 6 p.m. In addition to the unveiling of the 2nd edition of the book (which attendees receive as part of their $50 ticket price), organizers are hoping to provide up to 1,000 of the city’s best and brightest Blacks the opportunity to network with one another.

Five citizens to be inducted into the Gallery today

Five citizens are being honored for their contributions to the history of the city of Birmingham by being named the latest additions to the city’s Gallery of Distinguished Citizens. The annual induction ceremony is being held at Vulcan Park this afternoon beginning at 12 p.m. and it’s open to the public.

Oscar Adams, Jr., Colonel Stone Johnson, Nina Miglionico, Steve Orel, & J. Richmond Pearson will be honored with bronze statues and a new interactive kiosk when their likenesses are place in City Hall. Check out the News’ coverage from earlier this week as well.
