Railroad’s next phase

RRP-Amphitheater

There’s been a lot of conversations about Railroad Park recently, particularly about the status of work on what’s been called Birmingham, AL’s living room. Two weeks ago during a presentation at the Operation New Birmingham breakfast, attendees were given an update on the progress of Railroad Park, complete with renderings of the proposed 3,000-seat amphitheater and of the signage that would great users as they entered from the corners. Funds must still be raised for its construction, which means it will most likely not be completed until it is a part of phase II of the site’s development

A Picture of Health atop the Redmont tonight

healthposterIf you’re still looking for something to do this evening, Birmingham Bombshells is holding a pretty nice party tonight atop the historic Redmont Hotel in downtown Birmingham, AL. The event, A Picture of Health, is a benefit to raise money for ovarian cancer research and in particular the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation. It starts at 7 p.m. and it gives you a chance to enjoy one of the most breathtaking views of The Magic City while dressing up in 1940s-era glamour and bid on items as part of the “Every Girl’s Fantasy” auction.

There are still tickets available, at least you’ve got until 5 p.m. to purchase them in advance. We’d love to hear that they sold out tonight…

Parking rates go up today in Birmingham

Folks looking for a parking space around Birmingham today may notice that it will most likely be costing them a little more to do so. Last week The Birmingham News reported that parking rates are going up; city officials hope that new parking meter mechanisms will be installed by the end of the year allowing them to double parking fees at 30 minute, 2-hour and 3-hour meters. Municipal parking deck and lot charges in the city center and at the airport will also be going up starting today. Don’t forget that parking ticket rates went up last year, with last July serving as the first of two months of amnesty for those with unpaid citations.

Langford wants to “Do the dome…NOW!”

The "Do the Dome" shirtBirmingham Mayor Larry Langford shared his intentions with the audience assembled in The Harbert Center early this morning. He hoped that the Birmingham City Council approves his request to release funds to begin construction of the much-talked about multipurpose facility for the BJCC campus downtown.

Or to put it simply, he’s saying, “Let’s do the dome… NOW!”

Hunting for hidden treasure in Birmingham

levyslogoScott Register (of Reg’s Coffee House fame) let folks in on a little secret around metro Birmingham today via his Facebook account. Apparently Levy’s Jewelers… we’ll just let you read it as Reg wrote it:

“…They cleaned out a bunch of nice jewelry that was stuck in inventory, wrapped it up in their signature silver boxes & blue ribbons and randomly hid them all over Birmingham. Finders Keepers so to speak…

According to the comments in the Facebook status, they’ve hidden one silver box tied with a piece of blue ribbon for each of the years they’ve been in business (87 in all) everywhere from groceries to hospitals and everywhere in between. Sounds like a fun scavenger hunt to us.

Random Shots: a snapshot of Birmingham

Bob Farley/f8PhotoA few weeks ago we posted some photos from the Lyric Theatre in advance of the open house and included a photo of a mural of the city that was being stored in the building (it’s image #9).

Well, the centennial mural’s four pieces have been moved to the new home of the Birmingham Jefferson History Museum at the former Young & Vann building downtown. They were so large they had to open up the wall to get it into its new home. The Terminal‘s Bob Farley took a closer look at the mural and provided these photos to share with you in The Gallery. According to their website, we’ll get a chance to take a closer look in person come next spring.
