Birmingham prepares to light new tree

The new tree arrives. acnatta/FlickrThe City of Birmingham will light this replacement Christmas tree tomorrow morning in Linn Park at 9:30 a.m. It arrived shortly after 3 p.m. this afternoon.

A crane and city crews were waiting to put the 30’+ tree into position so that those interested in helping decorate it may – beginning at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

The new tree was retrieved from nearby Tarrant and donated by 98.7 Kiss FM and Cox Radio as a replacement for the one that was burned down Wednesday morning as vandals attempted to steal its lights for copper.

Holiday music fills the airport terminal

Foxxy Fatts & Company. Courtesy of BHMThe wait to check in at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport‘s been a little easier to deal with this week.

It’s definitely not because it’s seeing a drop off in use; it’s actually seen an increase – at least up through October – according to recent reports.

No, this is because those flying out of The Magic City this holiday season are being greeted with the sounds of beautiful music as they enter the terminal. It’s part of the airport’s Twelve Days of Holiday Music series.

Today “The Connection Band” and Clay Chalkville High School Chamber Choir are scheduled to serenade those starting their journeys from BHM. The performances are being announced on the front page of the airport’s website.

It’s a nice way to take off on your holiday adventure, especially considering the upcoming changes for the airport. Today’s The Birmingham News story talks about some of those plans and the recent sale of $151 million to help start those changes in January.

Southwest’s slip could be Birmingham’s gain

Southwest Airlines logo. Courtesy of official website.A report released earlier this week could give loyal customers of low-cost airline Southwest Airlines here in Birmingham, AL a reason to hope, though it could still be a long shot.

The latest U.S. Department of Transportation Air Travel Consumer Report shows that Southwest has dropped to eighth place for on-time arrival performance, its lowest finish since the government began to collect the information in 1987 (see page 6 for the rankings).

A couple of weeks ago WBHM’s Andrew Yeager filed a piece about what the planned acquisition of AirTran by the Dallas-based airline may mean for The Magic City.

Considering that several reports about the results suggest the airline’s expansion into larger airports is a major reason for the drop, it gives more credence to the idea that shifting flights from the major hub in Atlanta to Birmingham might help them regain their on-time bragging badge of honor over the long term.

Time will tell…

2010 Montclair Run results are in

2010 Montclair Run logoThere were apparently many who enjoyed the warm weather on Thanksgiving Day morning and ventured over to Montclair Road to take part in the 34th annual Sam Lapidus Montclair Run. It’s a safe guess since it’s been one of the most searched for terms leading folks to the site in recent days. It only makes sense then to post the link to the official results as shared over on OnlineRaceResults.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Childhood Cancer Research Fund at Children’s Hospital and the fitness program at the Levite Jewish Community Center.

We’ve also taken the liberty of creating a PDF of the results so there’s a permanent record somewhere in town. By the way, we haven’t tested it yet, but we’re assuming that you can still “Sleep in for Sam” and make a donation to the research fund.

Happy Thanksgiving!

WishUponACupcake/FlickrBirmingham’s just a little quieter than normal as people begin to make that journey over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house (or wherever their journeys may be taking them today). It is known as the busiest traveling day of the year, but we knew there’d be a few of you checking in…

So we’re hoping that you’ll be willing to share your stories with the rest of The Terminal’s community during the next couple of days. Today’s Magic City Question hopes that we’ll learn more about long-standing and new traditions for the holiday while we’re taking a page out of The New York Times‘ book and seeing if folks are willing to share photos of their pending feasts and all of the preparation that goes along with it.

No matter what you choose to do, we hope that you enjoy Thanksgiving tomorrow!

Will a village emerge in Norwood?

Pepsi Refresh screenshotSeveral Birmingham-area organizations have turned to national online projects like the Pepsi Refresh project to try to secure funding for projects in recent months. One more has joined the fray in recent weeks. As of this posting it was ranked 152nd; the top two vote getters receive the prize for that month.

The Village, a non-profit ministry started in January 2008, is hoping to win $250,000 from the national program to help the organization secure the former Carraway Medical Center property just north of the city’s central business district – one they’ve been looking at for several months. The property would be turned into a “home and youth center for teens…”

The Village’s executive director, Andy Jenkins, has already asked folks visiting his blog to vote and help spread the word about the grant proposal, which would provide for salaries as well as operating expenses for three months.

The historic hospital complex in question is located amid several residential neighborhoods. These include Druid Hills, Fountain Heights and Norwood, an area that many in the city think will be the next one to see an urban revival.

Area homeowners have told Birmingham City Councilor Johnathan Austin that they oppose such a use of the facility while signs have begun to appear in Norwood voicing concern.

Barons announce 2011 promo schedule

The reason it’s even getting mentioned here today is because when their new promotional schedule was released last week, it was based on the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox playing their home games at Regions Park in 2011.

The schedule does state clearly though that dates and time are subject to change. A tentative agreement was announced recently between the city of Birmingham and the Barons to eventually play their games at an as of yet to be built ballpark in greater downtown Birmingham, leading to a less than enthusiastic response from Hoover mayor Tony Petelos.

The Birmingham Business Journal reported in October that former Barons owner Art Clarkson has offered to bring an independent league team to Regions Park if the Barons do indeed eventually move. Incidentally it was Clarkson who delivered greetings from the Chicago White Sox as part of Rickwood Field’s 100th anniversary this summer.
