Fire + Ice joins Birmingham’s restaurant scene

Those that visit Five Points South may notice a new occupant in the space that formerly housed a Gap and Seaside, FL based-Quincy Art Shop.
Fire + Ice Improvisational Grill officially opened yesterday afternoon after inviting some folks to try out their newest location (and first in the Southeastern U.S.) on Saturday evening. Additional locations are planned for Dubai and Panama later this year.
Guests were treated to a sneak peek event of what the restaurant has to offer. We could write about the place, the lively atmosphere and the food, but we figured why not just share some images taken by Bob Farley at the event.
We also wouldn’t mind a comment or two from folks that have already tried it out to let us know what you think…

We should have gotten the sign first
A little while back we wrote about the continuing pleas of the Forest Park-South Avondale to have the former Avonwood Cleaners demolished as it had become an eyesore in the community. Well, it looks like their prayers have been answered as the Birmingham News reports that the tear down has started.
It’ll hopefully be down by next week.
The contract to remove hazardous materials was originally on the January 2 Birmingham City Council agenda for approval (item 34).

Two local chefs up for James Beard award
Birmingham’s got two chances to bring home a James Beard Foundation award this year. Frank Stitt (Highlands Bar and Grill) and Chris Hastings (Hot and Hot Fish Club) are both up for “the Oscars of the food world” as the nominees for the 2008 edition of the awards were recently announced.
There are a lot of honors up for grabs, so you may want to visit the official list and scroll down to see who our guys are up against in their respective categories (Stitt – outstanding chef; Hastings – best chef – South).
We’ll find out if they’re winners with everybody else on June 8 when the awards are handed out in Lincoln Center‘s Avery Fisher Hall in New York City. You can always go on up and say you were there when…
Who’s responsible for Birmingham’s reputation?
We constantly talk about the University of Alabama at Birmingham as being the economic engine of not just the city or the region, but the state.
Today one the columnists for their student newspaper, the Kaleidoscope, decided to pose a rather powerful question (and challenge) to her fellow students and I believe to the community at large.
I think that the challenge should also be brought to the masses.
Which leads us to today’s Magic City Question (we are aware that our front page feature has “stalled” working on that right now).
