On the agenda: More XOs and safety

This morning’s Birmingham City Council agenda includes a request from Mayor Langford for permission to purchase 1,530 more XO laptops (Item 8) and distribute them to grades 1-6 while providing additional training for teachers and parents (Item 9). The total cost for the purchase and implementation – This comes less than a month after UAB was awarded a two-year $1 million grant to help integrate the XO laptop into math and science curriculum for the city’s school system and it can be said that it has been a successful program.

The city will also be moving forward with matching the $11,923.60 provided by the U.S. Department of Justice’s bulletproof vest partnership program (Item 10) ensuring increased protection for municipal law enforcement officers.

We’re pretty sure that @bhamweekly will be providing play by play of today’s meeting on Twitter… not completely sure though…

Bachus holds town hall tonight

spencerbachus2U.S. Congressman Spencer Bachus is holding a town hall meeting of his own this evening, August 17, at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center beginning at 7 p.m. He hopes to give the folks he represents in Alabama’s 6th Congressional district an opportunity to voice their concerns over the current national debate about an overhaul of our health care system. He also recently released a statement about how some are trying to discredit the town hall meetings that have already been held. Tonight’s event will no doubt bring out vocal supporters to the two main camps that have developed during the national discourse.

Ludacris says he’s not playing Heritage Fest

UPDATE: 8.11.2009 – The organizers of the Birmingham Heritage Festival  have announced that this year’s event has been canceled. The Birmingham News has the details.

Those who bought tickets to see Ludacris at the festival on Friday night though may be a little disappointed; the hip-hop star sent out the following tweet last night:

Bogus promoter alert!!! Birmingham, AL Heritage festival, completely false. Luda will not be there so don’t buy tickets!!!
