Dig for plants tomorrow

It’s time for the annual (FREE!) Plant Dig presented by the Keep Birmingham Beautiful Commission. I’d try to write a really cool description of the event, but Christina probably did it best when she wrote up last year’s event – including (basic) directions. It’ll be warmer too. The fun’s from 12-4 p.m. at the New Georgia landfill.

The State of the Railroad Park is good

The current news surrounding Railroad Park is good with Birmingham City Council committees moving forward a proposal that would allowMayor Langford to pledge $5 million for construction of the 3,000 seat amphitheater. While unforseen circumstances have called for some changes from the master plan developed by Tom Leader Studio, it will still be a significant addition to Birmingham’s city center. There may be some that still think that the conversation about the park is premature.

One quick drive by the site in recent weeks though would lead you to have a different feeling about it – like progress since work began on the site December 23. It’s currently on schedule to be a Christmas/New Year’s gift to the city.

We’ll see you at TechMixer tonight!

tmexpologoThere’s a rumor that Jason Donaldson, our newest staff member/intern/all-around nice guy, may actually make an appearance – there may be others too…

There’s another one that says that I’m giving away two (2) white Terminal Ts this evening at our TechMixer booth…

Both are true – though I’m not quite sure when Jason’s getting there.

Come on by, say hello, enter for the t-shirts… yeah, that’s about it. Well, that and check out the 68 booths and mingle with all of the other folks (at least 1200 signed up so far) at McWane Science Center tonight from 5-8 p.m. Here’s the program to guide you through (we’ll be there right when you walk in – look for the orange).

Did we mention it’s FREE?! You aren’t able to pre-register anymore, but it shouldn’t take that long to do so once you arrive tonight!

What’s BiCiCoop?

We’re hoping that you heard about last week’s fundraising effort for BiciCoop on Valentine’s Day. We’re also hoping you’ve heard of this effort born in Birmingham’s cycling community. If you haven’t yet, you’ve got a chance next week (February 26 at 7 p.m.) to learn some more about what they do courtesy of a community interest meeting at Nomad Supply Shop (916 23rd Street South). This may finally be Birmingham’s equivalent to Bikestations on the West Coast.

If you’re still looking for more information, how about checking out this interview with co-founder Elisa Munoz courtesy of Bike Commuters from February 4 and the blog worked on by Elisa and Anna Carrigan, called Bike Skirt.

One more Moe’s (and another one soon)

We mean Moe’s Original Bar-B-Que and not that other casual food chain. Local owner Kevin Witherington announced the opening of their 3rd location yesterday in Hoover at Lake Crest Plaza, replacing a Golden Rule as reported by AL.com’s Hoover blog on February 4.

The restaurant concept is headquartered in Vail, CO – and was started by three Alabamians.

Witherington also announced plans to open a fourth one next month at 731 29th Street South in Birmingham’s Lakeview district – a space that most recently housed the Lakeview Oyster House.

New Sidewalk director search begins

Sidewalk logoThis afternoon Sidewalk supporters received a note via email written by AIMA President Alan Hunter formally announcing the departure of Catherine Pfitzer as executive director of Sidewalk and the launch of a national search for a new executive director. We’d tell you more, but we thought you might like to read the note yourself (it’s in PDF format). Of course, you could also check out the job description too.
