Health.com gets some link love from Matt

Birmingham-based Health Magazine, part of the Southern Progress stable of publications, got some kudos from Matt Mullenweg, founding developer of WordPress (the software used to run this very site incidentally, at least this version is), for their use of the open-source software on their recently redesigned website yesterday.

So we’re thinking that you need to check it out.

David Neal’s OK; but he’s suing Fox 6

UPDATE: If you didn’t already know that Neal is a weekend meteorologist for CBS42 (since 2009), he’s also working for WeatherNationTV.

Well, we finally know what happened to former Fox 6 chief meteorologist David Neal.

The popular weatherman has not been on the air for several weeks, and based on this afternoon’s post by The Birmingham News, we know it’s not by choice.

They also have a link to a PDF of the circuit court filing containing the allegations being made.

So, you still miss Beaner & Ken huh?

Well you can always let them know just how much Birmingham does! For those of you that didn’t know, Beaner & Ken (well, at least Ken) still maintain a website/blog tied to their former #1 morning show. The show was canceled in mid-December 2006 as part of what I still call our local Radio Carousel.

While still on their extended “vacation” they’re staying pretty active: Beaner’s vlogging (video blogging) for blogtv.com and Ken’s still in The Magic City playing in a band called More Cowbell. So show them some love and send them an email; it may end up in their fan mail section

UPDATE: The Birmingham News… it’s gone blog!

Well, apparently not yet… though we were able to catch this screenshot of a revamped Birmingham News homepage about mid-morning – though it’s currently gone back to its original state. The redesign resembled the layout that is currently in use on al.com’s entertainment section.

We’re not sure if we just stumbled across something by accident or not, but we’re sure that our friends at al.com will let us know…

UPDATE: 1:12 p.m. – According to the folks at the paper, the page has been fixed, and it is now active as it is picture above. It was suffering problems due to the severe weather affecting the region right now.

Steve and Leah take to the airwaves

Tune in to WERC 960 AM this morning before 11 a.m. and you can say you were listening the first day that Steve Shannon and Leah Brandon were on the air together in The Magic City.

The radio veterans started their run on the heritage AM station at 7 a.m. The Birmingham Business Journal posted this story on their site last month to announce their pending arrival. Of course, you could just check out the station’s website for the hosts’ bios (and the stream of the radio broadcast) or read the press release that Paul sent over to us late last month.

Mark Prater’s coming back to Birmingham

Mark Prater headshotThe Prattville native has announced on his website that he will be returning to metro Birmingham as CBS 42‘s new chief meteorologist beginning July 1. The former ABC 33/40 meteorologist, last in the market in late 2004, seems to be looking forward to the challenge. He’s currently the chief meteorologist on INN in Davenport, IA

al.com is live – on Twitter!

So just before I was about to say that it was a shame that al.com hadn’t gotten it’s own Twitter profile yet – poof! – it magically appears.

Most of the mainstream media in the city recently joined the Twitterverse (even if they aren’t all joining in the conversation that it’s supposed to be spawning). Luckily though, unlike the tweets sent out by The Birmingham News, the links from the al.com feed actually take you directly to the stories directly.

Still waiting for that first Fox 6 tweet though…
