2007 Drought: Time changes, restrictions don’t

The Homewood City Council modified the time portion of their water restriction ordinance during this evening’s meeting according to reports from Fox6 News.

Residents may now water their lawns before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m. The restrictions are still in place however, as they are throughout the region as a result of our stage 3 drought conditions.

Babywearing growing in metro Birmingham

The amount of new parents that are turning to "babywearing" is incredible. Our local resident experts in the field, the Magic City Slingers, have reason to enjoy this Friday the 13th as their new business cards have arrived.

Birmingham’s chapter (Alabama’s first incidentally) of Nine In, Nine Out, the national babywearing organization, says that it purpose is to bring together experienced “babywearers” and people who would like help choosing and using a baby carrier. They call it a “fellowship of the sling.” You may want to check out the nonprofit’s site to learn more about who founded the group and how it is helping newborns and parents.

Franklin’s Homewood Gourmet turns 10 this weekend!

Franklin’s Homewood Gourmet‘s Baby Blue Salad is arugably one of the most loved dishes in metro Birmingham. Tomorrow morning, July 7, if you head out to the Pepper Place Farmer’s Market, Franklin Biggs will be making it as part of his cooking demonstration (beginning at 9 a.m.).

If you miss that, and after you go by the shop and realize it’s closed for the day, you could head on over to his 10th anniversary celebration at the Children’s Dance Foundation (CDF). It goes from 3 – 7 p.m. and costs $20. The net profit from the event will be split between the CDF and Taste of the Nation, a national program that is working to end childhood hunger in America.

Ferrol Sams, The Alabama Booksmith

He is considered one of the best living Southern authors and tonight, we’ll have the privilege of having him in metro Birmingham. Dr. Sams will be making an appearance at The Alabama Booksmith, where he will be reading from his new book, Down Town.

They’ve doubled the size of their events area to accomodate the anticipated turnout for the event. Sams is also expected to reflect on his previous works and copies of Run With the Horsemen, Whisper of the River and When All the World Was Young will be available in paperback.

Those unable to attend the event may still purchase a signed copy of Down Town through the Homewood bookstore’s website.

It’s not too late to go to PhotoCamp tomorrow!

Professional and amateur photographers rejoice; PhotoCamp is near! The one day workshop will take place tomorrow (Saturday, April 21) at the Homewood Public Library (1721 Oxmoor Road; directions) from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. It is building off of the success of Birmingham’s BarCamp, providing an intense one-day “un-conference” where you are not only the audience, but potentially a presenter as well. BarCamp focused on our tech community, while PhotoCamp switches gears and provides the same opportunity to members of our photog community. The agenda is based on whatever participants want to learn about and what they are able to share with others.

PhotoCamp is being sponsored by the Birmingham Public Library; they wrote about the event on their blog. Check out the event information on Upcoming.org or the official wiki page for the event for additional information.
