A quiet problem no more

Syphilis as a major issue has been affecting Jefferson County since 2002.  In 2006, there were 238 reported cases in Jefferson County alone.  At first, you could pin point the specific areas in Jefferson County that were affected, but now it’s county wide.  Alabama is currently ranked fifth in the nation with cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia.  Jefferson County has the tenth highest number of recorded cases of syphilis in the country.

Children’s Hospital unveiled its new helicopter to the public today via a story in today’s Birmingham News. We figured you might be interested in getting an up close and personal look at the new pediatric transport chopper, so we invite you to click on the image above (or just click here) and check out our photo gallery of this new extremely useful tool for the hospital.

FYI – this is also the debut of our new photo gallery section (appropriately titled the gallery) here on The Terminal. We figured you may want to know a couple of things about that really weird slideshow function that we’re using.

Take a moment: Help Cooper Green get an MRI machine

The emails have been floating around since yesterday and today’s Birmingham News even ran an article about it. Cooper Green Mercy Hospital does not currently have an MRI machine. Enter winanmri.com, and a chance for us to help them win one!

A video was made to tell folks why they need the machine. It’s now your job to go to the site, watch the video and then vote.

Given the late start on posting the video, Cooper Green is currently well behind other hospitals and need to catch up – so please watch the video (which is hilarious) and vote (and tell your friends!).

Unfortunately, you can vote once per day from your computer (but you’ve got until December 31 to make up for lost time).

Yet another reason for more greenspace

We’re #5 this time. According to Forbes we are the 5th most sedentary city in the United States. The results were released yesterday on the magazine’s website, where they also explained just how they arrived at their findings as well as how they determined that some cities were not necessarily as healthy as they thought.

We did get high marks for physical activity. Only a little more than ¼ of the folks that they spoke with said that they did not exercise. But we still watch 39 hours of TV a week…

All the more reason why folks need to head out tonight to celebrate with the Friends of Red Mountain Park over at B&A Warehouse. Check out the listing on the Timetable calendar so you can get a taste of what you’ll hear this evening.

BTW – you can see the rest of the top 20 list in slideshow format over on their site.

It’s not a third-world country. It’s Talladega.

The big story making the Internet rounds now implies that some folks up in Washington consider NASCAR fans a health risk. Congressional staffers sent to Talladega Superspeedway last weekend and again to Lowe’s Motor Speedway this weekend were encouraged to catch up on their vaccinations for hep A and B, flu, diphtheria and tetanus before the fact-finding trip. Seems the guys from the Homeland Security Commission where at the race to study mass gatherings. Well, they also toured some local health facilities and claim that is the reason for the shots but that doesn’t make for good jokes and controversy.

You may think this story is completely without merit but there are some health risks from being around NASCAR fans. For example, we suggest you find out who the person’s favorite driver is before you make an offhand comment about Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson. It could be consider fightin’ words. And never ever make fun of Dale Earnhardt or Litte E anywhere on the grounds of Talladega. Trust us.

There’s lots of places to read more about this, but we like this post on Autoblog.com. To be honest, we’ve got friends there.
