Blogging in the ‘Ham: Dopplegänger Flutter

The world recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the blogosphere (at least as we know it). Some shined a brighter light on the phenomenon more than others. NPR is doing a week-long series that began this morning. There are even rumors that The Birmingham News may run a story about two area bloggers that run websites in town (hint: you’re reading one of them right now) in the near future.

We’ve decided that we wanted to shine a light on some of the bloggers that are active in Birmingham, AL. All of them have their reasons for writing (and we hope that they may share some words on their behalf either on their site or in the comments section here); we just want to help make more people aware of them. And because it’s the holidays, I’m the one that gets to write the entries…

The first one I’d like to shine a light on is actually one that will be disappearing from the scene in the coming days (and one that I don’t know as well as I wish I did).

Random Shots: Looking at lights in Birmingham

A popular pastime during the holidays is to go around town and look at how folks are decorating their homes. The Birmingham News ran a story on Sunday about just that, and have now posted a map showing locations suggested by their readers. If you’ve got any images of lights that you’d like to share with all of us from your travels, submit them to our Flickr Group or email them into photos@bhamterminal.com.

Magic City Question: What was “the” event in Birmingham in 2007?

We’re still looking for answers to yesterday’s question, and this one’s a little late to get out, but we felt we had to do it, especially since we know that most of you are just staring out the window wondering just how much longer that rain’s going to last…

What was the defining event for Birmingham (and/or the metro region) this year? Let’s hear your answers…

One more thing – while we appreciate people submitting answers, we’d like to remind folks that unless there’s a valid email address submitted, your comments will not be posted. Our terms of use policy is available for review by clicking on the link located in the footer both on this page and over on Magic City Question.

From the Stationmaster: So you want to meet our staff, huh?

The Terminal's staff page

We’ve been promising for months now that we’d put up a page that would let you see and learn a little more about the folks behind the scenes here at The Terminal. We really wanted to do it because we knew that many of you still didn’t believe that it wasn’t just me changing names every once in a while.

Well, just in time so you know who’s who at tonight’s Holiday Get Together, we’ve finally posted an almost complete list of our current volunteer staff. There are more names that will be added in the coming weeks, so check back often as we get ready for 2008.

Plus – as promised to folks in this week’s newsletter – here’s a little note from me giving you an idea of what to expect as 2008 starts up in just 11 days…

Don’t forget to write ALDOT before December 28

Conservation Alabama logoConservation Alabama took the time late last night to post an entry about a request for questions and comments regarding the proposed Northern Beltline that was published in yesterday’s Birmingham News, but not on the department’s website (though we are not sure that it is required).

We won’t necessarily bore you with the details of the post; we’d rather you take it upon yourself to read the entry. We will say that several of the questions raised deal with the long term effects of the construction of the road. What we will do is post the contact information if you feel so inclined to write a letter to Brian Davis, ALDOT Division 3 Engineer, during this holiday season. We have a feeling that some of you may want to:

Mr. Brian Davis – Division Engineer
Third Division – Alabama Department of Transportation
1020 Bankhead Highway West 35204
P.O. Box 2745
Birmingham, AL 35202-2745

Attn.: Mrs. Sandra F. P. Bonner

Tomorrow a called meeting of the Hoover Board of Education may lead to the naming of the man who will occupy what has become one of the most revered coaching positions in all of high school football. The Birmingham News reports that there are as many as six finalists that will be considered; the Atlanta Journal-Constitution shines a spotlight on one of them. Not to be lost in the buzz about the hiring is a decision about the former Berry Middle School property.

We’ll be riding around on vintage streetcars soon enough according to a plan proposed by BJCTA executive director David Hill this afternoon. The proposal would have a streetcar route running from the current MAX bus terminal (part of the proposed intermodal transit center) and connect it to Linn Park as part of phase I. That phase could be in place by 2010.

The First 100: Coming soon to a monitor near you – birminghamal.gov

Ever wondered what it would be like to watch Tuesday’s Birmingham City Council meetings online? Well, you’re about to find out.

The city has announced plans to revamp the website by January 1. Changes will include live streaming of regular council meetings, in addition to allowing viewers to search and replay portions of the meetings on demand and a new web address, http://www.birminghamal.gov (already active and linked to the existing site layout).

The company providing the city with the web tracking technology, Granicus, also provides similar services for cities including Charlotte, NC, Los Angeles, CA, and metro Louisville, KY.
