Swinging for the stars

That’s what some of golf’s greatest legends will be doing next weekend during the annual Regions Charity Classic here at Birmingham’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Ross Bridge. The title sponsor has changed buildings downtown since last year’s event, now occupying space in the former AmSouth Building. Playing off of the buildings’ popular Christmas card to the city, they’ve decided to have a golfer grace the sides of its building through next weeks’s event.

Hopefully he’s not going to knock off the top of the Regions Harbert Plaza but instead swinging for that crescent moon in the distance…

Artist Laura Lockhart will show her work for a fifth year at this weekend’s Magic City Art Connection. Her art is inspired by her travels – she uses the photos she takes on her trips abroad and combines the prints with painting. These works are created on masonite and involve an intricate process layering photographs, wax and acrylic. In some cases, sand, grass or seaweed is also used to create unusual textures.

She was inspired to create her series of travel imagery by a quote from Mark Twain:

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words, Birmingham Museum of Art

Head on over to the Birmingham Museum of Art and hear master storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham today as she tells the tales behind the photographs in the current exhibition, Kathryn Tucker Windham: My Land, My People, taken over a 40 year span from the Great Depression through the civil rights movement. Using slides and her uncanny narrative ability, she will also share the stories of many photographs which have never been published.

If you miss the talk, Ms. Windham’s photographs are on display until May 25 at the museum.
