Rice visits Boys and Girls Club before the Regions Tradition

Todd Hornsby/Filament ArtistsFormer U.S. Secretary of State – and Birmingham native – Condoleezza Rice joined representatives from Regions Financial Corp. on June 4 at the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club for their “What a Difference a Day Makes” service program .

It’s not exactly a coincidence she’s in town – Dr. Rice serves as the honorary chairperson for the Regions Tradition golf tournament taking place at the Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club this week. The event’s Birdies for Charity program helps raise money for several area non-profits, including the Boys and Girls Club of Central Alabama. She’s scheduled to help start the festivities this morning (June 6) at  9 a.m.

Rice is a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Board of Governors and she’s served as a senior adviser to the Board of Directors at Regions.

Regions Bank, Talladega Superspeedway make donations

As news continues to come in about the devastation associated with yesterday’s storms, area businesses have started to commit funds to help those affected.

Regions Bank announced that they will be donating $1 million towards relief efforts in Alabama and other affected Southern states. They also announced that donations for the American Red Cross’ Tornado Disaster Relief Fund will be accepted from customers and non-customers alike at all Regions Bank branch locations.

Talladega Superspeedway has made a commitment of $100,000 towards relief efforts. They’ve also announced plans to open the track to race fans wanting to drive their cars on the historic race track next weekend (May 6-8) for $50 d0nations to the Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Last night, Scott Pierce set up a Causes page on Facebook dedicated to raising funds for the American Red Cross Birmingham Chapter. As of the writing of this post, the page had more than 670 members and had raised nearly $6,500 for Alabama Tornado Relief.

If you know of any other corporate pledges or of other opportunities to donate, please share in the comments section below. We’ll update our list as we are able to.

A new addition (sort of) to the Birmingham skyline

The skyline's a changing again

If you take a closer look at the photo above (or look up if you’re downtown), you’ll notice that work is going on atop Regions Bank’s Birmingham headquarters. The building has only had signs visible on two sides during its history, dating back to its days as AmSouth Tower. The new signs will allow folks approaching The Magic City from all sides to immediately pick out the building.

That’s what some of golf’s greatest legends will be doing next weekend during the annual Regions Charity Classic here at Birmingham’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Ross Bridge. The title sponsor has changed buildings downtown since last year’s event, now occupying space in the former AmSouth Building. Playing off of the buildings’ popular Christmas card to the city, they’ve decided to have a golfer grace the sides of its building through next weeks’s event.

Hopefully he’s not going to knock off the top of the Regions Harbert Plaza but instead swinging for that crescent moon in the distance…
