Jazz JamFest features special jazz performers each fourth Sunday of the month at the historic Carver Theatre. The stage becomes yours as you lead your own jam session with the band.

This month’s special guest is Cleve Eaton, a recognized name in the jazz world, as a producer, composer and arranger. Eaton is known for his incredible performances with the Ike Cole Trio, Donald Byrd-Pepper Adams Quintet, the Larry Novak Trio, and over thirty recordings in his ten years with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, which included four gold singles, including Hang on Sloopy and Wade in the Water. Eaton’s numerous honors include his induction into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame (this February), the Playboy Jazz Poll, Canada’s Cultural Enhancement Award and the Achievement Award at the Count Basie Tribute Concert. He received the Governor’s Arts Award 1995 (Alabama) and the Don Redman Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

La Paree’s coming down

This longtime downtown Birmingham sign will soon be going away. Harbert Realty Services announced this morning that they will be demolishing the former La Paree restaurant, located at 2013 5th Avenue North, to allow for more space in the planned 4-Diamond Marriott Renaissance Hotel. The $52 million luxury hotel will be contained in the former Regions Bank headquarters at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and 20th Street.

The first networking event of the year for the Birmingham Urban League Young Professionals, a volunteer auxiliary of the Birmingham Urban League, consisting of males and females, ages 21-40. This event will kick off the 2008 A.G. Gaston Conference.

(FYI – the conference is hosted by the Birmingham Business Resource Center and Advanced Planning Services, LLC and it will be taking place on February 19 & 20 at the BJCC. Click here for more information.)

The event is sponsored by the Birmingham Change Fund and features food, fun great networking opportunities and information about upcoming activities at this year’s conference.

The Birmingham Urban League is celebrating its 40th anniversary with an exciting event called Journey Through the Decades. The evening will feature Top 40 music from past the four decades from party band Total Assets and special dance performances from local performers. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served throughout the evening.

The evening will kick off with an awards ceremony honoring various corporate, nonprofit, faith based, government and municipal organizations that have made an impact on the community and helped the Urban League further its mission of assisting all racial and ethnic groups, in achieving social and economic equality.

Cost: $80 (they are offering a $40 discounted ticket for young professionals – if they use the code “YP”.)

23rd Annual ONB St. Patrick’s Day Parade, downtown Birmingham

This year’s edition, as always, will travel from Five Points South and make its way to Linn Park along the Birmingham Green. It may also be a little more sci-fi than normal, since Omegacon, one of the largest sci-fi conventions in the southeast, will be in town and will march in the parade!

An unbelievable cast of sci-fi, horror and fantasy costumers will join in this year’s parade. From wookies to warlocks and Star Troopers to star ships, this will be one impressive cast of characters. Businesses and organizations that think they’d like to join the already impressive list of Birmingham area participants taking part in this year’s parade, please do.

Spring Choral Concert, First United Methodist Church (Birmingham)

First United Methodist Church of Birmingham invites you to visit their sanctuary on a Sunday evening and enjoy one of the best choirs in the Southeast. Their chancel choir will be accompanied by members of The Alabama Symphony Orchestra as they perform The Celestial Country by Charles Ives.

Dinner will be served following the concert in the Church’s dining area. Free parking is available in two lots accessed from 18th Street South

Cost: The concert is free. Donations accepted for dinner.

Phillips Academy Fundraiser and Gallery Art Sale, 2216 2nd Avenue North

Artwork created by 14 local artists as well as students at Phillips Academy will be available for sale. The gallery being used for the show, a private downtown loft residence, will feature antique automobiles as props.
