Birmingham Urban LeagueThe Birmingham Urban League will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this Friday at the Harbert Center. Both the Urban League and the Birmingham Urban League Young Professionals (BULYP) advance their missions through the delivery of programs that empower area racial and ethnic groups.

Both groups focus specifically on education, housing, workforce development and youth services. They are working together to close gaps by addressing the problems that racial and ethnic groups face in the areas of education, economics, health, civic engagements and civil rights.

They do so by employing a five-point strategy focusing on:

  • education and youth empowerment
  • economic empowerment
  • health and quality of life empowerment
  • civic engagement and leadership empowerment
  • civil rights and racial justice empowerment

BULYP is a growing organization that consist of men and women between the ages of 21-40. Marquelon Sigler said their programming is the best way they attract their young professionals. He also said that in recent years they have started at least four signature programs implemented on a quarterly basis. They have a series of mixers focused on specific themes with guest speakers that help empower Birmingham’s youth. The organization meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Birmingham Urban League’s offices.

Friday’s event, Journey through the Decades, will be honoring various corporate, nonprofit, faith based, government and municipal organizations. The evening will feature local party band, Total A$$et$, and according to Cherie Fields, the event’s coordinator, “the dancing will be lead by Pasquale School of Dance.” There will also be a cocktail hour, cash bar, and hors d’ oeuvres. Fields wants everyone to come out and have a good time with them as they celebrate 40 years.
