Hear Woodlawn’s Story TONIGHT!

This evening people will gather in Woodlawn High School‘s auditorium from across the metro area to hear and share in listening to Woodlawn Stories, a storytelling project undertaken by the Desert Island Supply Co, a nonprofit creative writing program for children in Birmingham, AL.

Technical difficulties have delayed us sharing a completed piece, but we felt that if you hadn’t quite made up your mind about where you were planning to go this evening that you needed to hear from DISCO founder Chip Brantley about what tonight’s event means to him – and potentially to the City of Birmingham.

The project was supported in part by a $10,000 award from the Kresge Arts in Birmingham program. Fifty people from Woodlawn were invited to share their stories with each other and the community at large, potentially the first step in changing the narrative that has been written for them by others.

This weekend’s performances are free and open to the public. Tonight’s will begin at 7 p.m. with Saturday’s beginning at 4 p.m.

By the way, if Chip can’t convince you to attend, maybe Woodlawn High School graduate and retired college football coach Bobby Bowden’s comments from his appearance on WJOX’s Morning Drive today can.

Happy Pi Day!

We promised some of our readers that we’d be sure to share at least one music lesson today.

UPDATE: Apparently Lars Erickson decided he’d file a copyright claim against the video we originally shared – so we’re going to share his video instead. We’ll let you know what happens next as soon as possible.

We were a little worried about finding the right one, but think we have. Special thanks to Stephen Vinson and Laughing Squid for making sure we were aware of it. We hope you enjoy this opportunity to escape musically for a few minutes.

Thanks also for your support of this site over the last four years. Hopefully some of you will be able to make it out tonight for #piecampbhm. If not, there will hopefully be more than enough opportunities to talk over the next twelve months.

UAB is going dancing on Tuesday

Congrats to the UAB Blazers mens basketball team for making it into this year’s NCAA Tournament! As you can tell from this video shared on CBS 42’s website last night, they were pretty excited about it themselves.

Last night UAB learned they’d be playing fellow No. 12 seed Clemson on Tuesday evening as one of the First Four games. Tip-off will be at 8 p.m. CT; the game will be played in Dayton, OH and aired on TruTV. They are one of two Conference USA teams in this year’s tournament, down from four last yearUAB brought home conference hardware last week, with Coach Mike Davis being named Conference USA coach of the year and guard Aaron Johnson garnering player of the year honors.

It will be the Blazers’ first trip to “The Dance” since the departure of former head coach Mike Anderson in 2006 and their 14th appearance overall.

Last night’s selection didn’t come without some folks questioning the choice (cue ESPN).

Good news, Birmingham

If you haven’t had an opportunity to check out national traditional media outlets in recent weeks, you’ve missed several chances to watch or listen to some pieces looking at some of the great things taking place in Birmingham, AL.

A couple of weeks ago, Deontée Gordon, senior account executive for Infomedia, showed folks from CNN three of his favorite places as part of the network’s “My City, My Secret” series (that’s the video clip available to your left).

This weekend, people probably experienced another “driveway moment” as NPR’s State of the Re:Union played excerpts of their recent visit to Alabama’s Magic City as part of an upcoming episode during both episodes of Weekend Edition. The segments took a closer look at Red Mountain Park, soon to be one of the region’s largest parks, and at the good work being done by our friends at Scrollworks.

Incidentally the episode highlighting Birmingham, AL is one of five being prepared for the 2011 Spring season and currently previewed on their website. Videos of the segments shared this weekend have also been posted on the site.

Holiday wishes from the stationmaster

With many people suggesting that they’re beginning their holiday weekend early, I just wanted to take a moment and say a few words.

Of course, You’d think I’d be remiss to not also take a moment and publicly thank all of you who’ve made it possible to be a finalist in The Birmingham News‘ Birmingham’s Best Readers Poll best website category for the third year in a row. But I didn’t.

I could also mention that we’ll post specific times and locations for the contributors interest meetings that I’m hoping to hold beginning January 5. Nope, didn’t do that either.

Perhaps I could’ve even mentioned the beginning of minor changes made to the front page of the site and (hopefully by this evening) the archives. Well, I do kind of tease about those…

In the end, all I wanted to do was deliver a simple message before everyone got on the road or busy with whatever it is that we do.

Joe Webb scores 1st NFL touchdown during MNF

Birmingham native and former UAB starting quarterback Joe Webb ran 13 yards for the Minnesota Vikings to record his first career NFL touchdown during Monday night’s 40-17 loss to the Chicago Bears at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN.

The Wenonah High School graduate was originally scheduled to start last night for the Vikings but future NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre had other plans, starting for the 298th time in his career instead after his consecutive starts streak ended last week.

A sack knocked Favre out of the game in the 2nd quarter with a head injury, leading to Webb taking over behind center. He finished the game completing 15 of his 26 pass attempts, good for 129 yards. He had one fumble, two interceptions and three sacks to go along with that touchdown.

Saturday’s Birmingham News interview of Webb covered not just the understandable nervousness about this game, but also the unusual conditions associated with it.

BCRFA Pinked the Galleria last Saturday

If you were at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover this past Saturday (October 2), you can probably say that you were a witness to what could easily be metro Birmingham’s largest ever flash mob event  – all to help raise awareness for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA).

Hundreds of people gathered in the food court at 12 p.m. as notes from Michael Jackson’s Thriller filled the space with many of the people joining in on a performance of the video’s famous dance sequence. The impromptu dance troupe then took off their jackets and sweaters, revealing pink t-shirts with the words “Got Pinked!” written in white across the front, inviting people interested to visit the BCRFA’s official website.

It was the first of several events that the organization is coordinating as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All proceeds raised by BCRFA are used in Alabama at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center as explained on the organization’s about page.
