AEC: All plastics now accepted

AEC logoArea recycling enthusiasts should be quite happy with this announcement by the Alabama Environmental Center.  Beginning this past Monday they are now accepting all plastics, #1-7.

Previously the plastics had to have a screw-on lid, so you couldn’t take in frozen entree trays, most kitty litter bins and things like that because different processes were required to recycle them.

Birmingham Urban League celebrates 40 years

Birmingham Urban LeagueThe Birmingham Urban League will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this Friday at the Harbert Center. Both the Urban League and the Birmingham Urban League Young Professionals (BULYP) advance their missions through the delivery of programs that empower area racial and ethnic groups.

Both groups focus specifically on education, housing, workforce development and youth services. They are working together to close gaps by addressing the problems that racial and ethnic groups face in the areas of education, economics, health, civic engagements and civil rights.

Do Dah Day, Caldwell + Rhodes Parks

Do Dah Day celebrates 29 years of fun and good causes on May 17. The annual festival, which has raised more than $500,000 since 1992 for Jefferson County animal shelters is one of the city’s most cherished springtime events. Festivities include the annual parade (it starts at 11:01 a.m.) as well as music and fun in Caldwell & Rhodes Parks in Birmingham’s Highland Park neighborhood. They can always use more volunteers for the event as well. Don’t forget about the crowning of the Do Dah Day king and queen on the 16th at Do Dah Eve!

Saving our Water, Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Saving our Water offers business leaders, government officials, planners, developers, builders, architects, building owners and interested citizens an excellent opportunity to explore the expanding water needs of the Birmingham region and how to sensibly meet these needs through planning for sustainability, conservation and cooperation.

It’s also a great chance to learn more about the Green Resource Center for Alabama, the organization organizing the event.

Street closings for Sunday’s Parliament House Hotel implosion

We have just learned what streets will be closed in advance of tomorrow’s scheduled implosion of the Parliament House Hotel.

Birmingham Police Department will be closing the following streets at approximately 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

20th Street South from 3rd Avenue to 6th Avenue South;

4th Avenue South from 19th Street to 21st Street South;

5th Avenue South from 19th Street to 21st Street South.

The implosion will not take place if there is severe wind or heavy rain. It’s scheduled to happen at 7 a.m. Weather forecast models suggest that the event will be finished in advance of severe weather currently expected to reach town by lunchtime tomorrow.

Birmingham Urban League’s 40th Anniversary Celebration, The Harbert Center

The Birmingham Urban League is celebrating its 40th anniversary with an exciting event called Journey Through the Decades. The evening will feature Top 40 music from past the four decades from party band Total Assets and special dance performances from local performers. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served throughout the evening.

The evening will kick off with an awards ceremony honoring various corporate, nonprofit, faith based, government and municipal organizations that have made an impact on the community and helped the Urban League further its mission of assisting all racial and ethnic groups, in achieving social and economic equality.

Cost: $80 (they are offering a $40 discounted ticket for young professionals – if they use the code “YP”.)
