Soothing banks through music

JeffCoCrap.com screenshot One resident thinks that music and bumper stickers will help ease the Jefferson County sewer debt, though in a completely different way than Birmingham city councilor William Bell’s proposal or one suggested by Jefferson County Commission president Bettye Fine Collins. This proposal calls for visitors to jeffcocrap.com to purchase bumper stickers, t-shirts and similar items, with a portion of the proceeds going to cover the principal of the county’s mounting debt. You can also check out the Jefferson County Sewer Flush over on YouTube.

We still have a feeling that it would take a long time for the money to pile up.

This is one of two banners that are hanging on the corner of the former Regions Bank headquarters in downtown Birmingham that were installed earlier this week. The signs announce the pending arrival of a Renaissance Hotel in the city center and mention the partners and participants in the project. Doesn’t hurt that it references the city’s new logo either.

APT reflects on Birmingham this month

Southern Museum of Flight - Alabama Public Television

Southern Museum of Flight is the focus of one of the stories being told this month on Alabama Public Television’s “Alabama Stories.” Special to The Terminal.

Throughout the month of March, Alabama Public Television will have shows focusing on the city of Birmingham. “These stories are unique and they will give a different focus on the city,” said Kathie Martin, Assistant VP at Alabama Public Television. The shows will look at topics including Birmingham’s crime rate, the city’s Irish and Celtic heritage, and Alabama’s involvement in the “Bay of Pigs” invasion. Martin says that people need to know the history of not just Birmingham, but the entire state.

“A lot people may not know that Alabama played a big role in the “Bay of Pigs”, or they may need to know [about] the crime rate in Birmingham because they have children that attend schools like UAB or Jefferson State,” said Martin. Two of the pieces will be featured on the network’s series “Alabama Stories.”

Bishop Woods calls for vote certification

This afternoon SCLC president Bishop Calvin Woods, elected officials and concerned citizens stood out in front of the Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd entrance to the Jefferson County Courthouse to ask that the election results from the February 5 special election for the Jefferson County Commission District 1 seat be certified. During his remarks, Bishop Woods suggested that the people who filed the motion to hold another election did not in fact live in District 1 but in District 4. There were other comments made, but you probably want to hear them for yourself (13:43):

Sloss Furnaces is getting turned into a festive Irish venue on Saturday as they attempt to have the ultimate St. Patty’s Throwdown! ShamRock promises 10 bands for $10 = a low dough, family friendly event (though you’ve still got to be 21+ to drink).

Included in the admission price is Taste o’ Ireland for food lovers, various Feats o’ Strength and Big Glove Boxing for patrons to display their prowess and Beer Pong for those who enjoy a good game!

National Women’s soccer to return to Legion Field

The United States (USA) defeated Norway (NOR) 4-1 during the third place match of the Women's World Cup China 2007 at Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium in Shanghai, China, on September 30, 2007. Ironically on the anniversary of the Olympic soccer countdown beginning at Legion Field for the 1996 Olympics, it was reported that the U.S. women’s national soccer team will make its return to Birmingham and The Old Gray Lady on May 3. It’s a tune-up for the national squad as they prepare for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the first time that Legion Field has been used by either of our national soccer teams since the installation of an artificial turf playing surface in 2006.
