Street paving in Five Points South tomorrow

One of the things announced by Mayor Langford during yesterday’s City Council meeting was the repaving of the Five Points South area in advance of next month’s PapaJohns.com Bowl (12.29). We’ve received word from the Five Points South Merchants Group that weather permitting, paving will take place along 11th Avenue South between 18th and 20th Streets while the city’s Department of Public Works paints the light poles, so you might want to keep that in mind when navigating the area.

Word is that the work will not affect businesses and that the police will work to make sure that customers have access to area stores and restaurants. Other portions of 11th and Magnolia Avenues may be paved as well, with 20th Street also being milled at that time.

Get inked for Pink!

There’s a new non-profit in town and they’re asking you to Get inked for Pink – specifically as it pertains to breast cancer awareness. They’re planning to hold two fundraisers in the coming months (the first is coming up on November 16 at The Bottletree) and have lined up a great stable of sponsors so far for their efforts, not to mention a two-day event being planned at Wicked Ways Tattoo Studio. You’ll also want to check out this video on NBC 13’s website from October. You’ll also want to visit their MySpace profile to learn about how you can get involved.

Time to Trick or Vote!

This evening people will gather at McWane Science Center to do their part to convince folks to take the next step in this year’s election. We’ve graciously provided space to folks from Empower Alabama over on my Birmingham so they can explain to you in their own words about Trick or Vote (especially since we’re serving as a sponsor for the event with WZZK, Red Mountain Bank, al.com. Thicket Magazine, Rojo and Birmingham Weekly).

Ensley‘s Tuxedo Junction is right on the edge of a revitalization that promises to rejuvenate the city’s Western area. Last month, one of its cultural landmarks moved one step closer to once again becoming a hub for culture. Main Street Birmingham was awarded a grant of $7,000 from the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA) for the planning of the future Nixon Cultural Center at Tuxedo Junction. The planned home for the center (pictured above) is famous for its upper floor ballroom, immortalized by Erskine Hawkins hit song Tuxedo Junction. When finished it will provide cultural and educational opportunities for local residents, including those slated to move into the Tuxedo Court HOPE VI development and visitors to the Magic City.

Thanks for showing your love for Birmingham’s hub

Most times you don’t get too excited when you place second in anything but …

This morning the results are out for this year’s Birmingham’s Best readers poll. We’re proud to say that we finished second in the best website category. We want to say thank you to everyone that took the time to vote for us last week!  Considering that we’re only 1½ years old and the competition we were facing was pretty stiff, we’re excited and humbled by the support that you showed us.

There’s still a lot more that we want to do this year. We hope that you’ll continue to support us and consider joining this motley crew of bloggers, photographers and casual onlookers as we do our best to serve you.

Thanks again!

New Good People brew debuts at Harvest Brew

The post title pretty much tells the story. 9 Numbers is reporting that Good People Brewing Company will be introducing an Oatmeal Stout tomorrow evening at Homewood’s Harvest Brew event. Tria Market’s blog has all of the pertinent information on this Oktoberfest celebration beginning at 5 p.m.According to the 9 Numbers post, it’s a limited release, so if you don’t get it tomorrow, you’ll want to get on over to the J. Clyde and Five Points Grill next week.

While we’re at it, the folks at Good People are asking folks to become fans of their page on Facebook instead of becoming friends with their profile.

EcoFest is this week

We’ve noticed that a lot of folks are looking for information about this year’s EcoFest, scheduled for Thursday evening at WorkPlay. We’ve got some more information about this year’s event over on destinations, our new online calendar (be gentle, it’s still in beta). We’d also like to direct you to their online auction, already open where you’ve got chance to bid on several items in advance, including the ones listed here (there are a lot, so we’d rather let you take a look yourselves – it may entice you).

We’ve also got some other great news for Terminal readers – the first 20 people that call the Southern Environmental Center at  205.226.4934 and say that they heard about this year’s event from The Terminal will qualify for half price tickets. Full price tickets are $50/person.
