What’s coming to The Summit this fall?

Summit Phase 5 constructionAccording to a recent Bayer Properties press release (and last week’s BBJ) southeastern Birmingham’s The Summit will be opening their new Class A office space and retail stores this fall, completing phase 6 of the now more than 1 million square foot multi-use/retail development.  Construction began last July and will finish up sometime this fall, (probably before Thanksgiving according to rumors).

The new phase of construction will include 50,000 square feet of specialty retail shops including:

Juicy Couture
James Avery Jewelry
Brighton Collectibles
Gloss Denim Bar

    The accounting firm Sellers, Richardson, Holman & West, LLP will be moving into the 35,000 square feet of office space that is being constructed along with a covered parking deck with direct access to the office building and a courtyard, arbor and open air balconies with a view of the Highway 280 landscape.

    Parking deck construction = road closings

    Construction work on the addition to the 4th Avenue parking deck in downtown Birmingham today means that Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd. between 4th and 5th Avenues North is currently closed to traffic.

    While it is a quiet day of the week downtown, it could lead to delays for folks that use the road to access area churches as well as the last day of events at this weekend’s ImagiCon.

    On the agenda: Construction abound

    A quick look over this morning’s Birmingham City Council agenda would not necessarily make you think of construction. However, it signals a great deal of construction and growth for the city, once you get down to the introduction and first readings section of today’s agenda.

    A great deal of the items focus on the Ensley neighborhood. Item 19 provides $900,000 to move forward with plans to renovate and stabilize the Ramsay-McCormack Building in the Ensley neighborhood. Item 20 provides for $2 million to be used from the city’s Capital Improvement Fund to assist in completing the HOPE VI Tuxedo Court development in Ensley. Item 32 suggests that the scope of work associated with the project will now include a public park and developing a portion of the Ensley Trail.

    Item 24 lets Mayor Langford provide $25,000 towards the $1 million commitment to Sloss Furnaces‘ new visitors center, with Item 28 allowing him to execute the project development contract.

    The State of the Railroad Park is good

    The current news surrounding Railroad Park is good with Birmingham City Council committees moving forward a proposal that would allowMayor Langford to pledge $5 million for construction of the 3,000 seat amphitheater. While unforseen circumstances have called for some changes from the master plan developed by Tom Leader Studio, it will still be a significant addition to Birmingham’s city center. There may be some that still think that the conversation about the park is premature.

    One quick drive by the site in recent weeks though would lead you to have a different feeling about it – like progress since work began on the site December 23. It’s currently on schedule to be a Christmas/New Year’s gift to the city.

    Bridging the BJCC

    Construction continues on the skywalk projects at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention. The renovations to the BJCC include the construction of two exterior bridges connecting the Sheraton Birmingham hotel to the North and South Exhibit Halls as well as the BJCC Arena. The bridges are due to be completed by this July and are part of the complex’s six-year, $52 million capital improvement project.

    The dirt’s moving at Ruffner

    Progress on Birmingham’s Park-nership, one of the larger initiatives undertaken by the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, always seems to be sought after, so I figured it would make sense to post this image. It’s the view looking through where Ruffner Mountain‘s pavillion once stood out to the site of the nature center’s new visitors center, currently scheduled for a May 2009 completion.

    Random Shots: Federal Reserve renovations continue

    Renovations and continue on the old Federal Reserve Building at the corner of 5th Avenue and 18th Street North by Melaver, Inc. of Savannah, GA. According to the developer’s, website,

    “…the Federal Reserve Building’s historic façade will be restored, and Melaver has committed to seeking LEED-NC Silver certification, assuring tenants of the most modern, efficient, technologically advanced and productive workspace available in the Birmingham MSA.”

    The building will house a hotel, restaurant, convention, retail and office space.
