Street paving in Five Points South tomorrow

One of the things announced by Mayor Langford during yesterday’s City Council meeting was the repaving of the Five Points South area in advance of next month’s PapaJohns.com Bowl (12.29). We’ve received word from the Five Points South Merchants Group that weather permitting, paving will take place along 11th Avenue South between 18th and 20th Streets while the city’s Department of Public Works paints the light poles, so you might want to keep that in mind when navigating the area.

Word is that the work will not affect businesses and that the police will work to make sure that customers have access to area stores and restaurants. Other portions of 11th and Magnolia Avenues may be paved as well, with 20th Street also being milled at that time.

The line forms for District 5

Those residents that live in Birmingham City Council District 5 learned two things yesterday (well, maybe – depending on who they were listening to) – William Bell was no longer their representative and someone was going to be picked for them by December. According to the Birmingham News, the list of folks that want the job (even if only for one year before having to run for re-election with the rest of the council) is already quite long – and it’s bound to get even longer before it’s all said and done. It already includes the former councilor and several others that have previously tried for the position.

Want to throw your hat in the ring too? As long as you’re over 18, registered to vote and currently live in District 5, you’ve got a chance – but applications are due in on Wednesday.

How much for that TV?

That could be one of many questions asked by customers that choose to visit Circuit City locations in Birmingham and nationwide as the electronics retailer announced that it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this morning. The publicly traded company once traded for $8.54 – its current value at the time of this post was $0.11 and they’d just announced last week that they would be closing 20% of their stores, including one that recently opened in Trussville. Reports had been suggesting that it would be bankruptcy or closings, but not both. The company will stay open and they still have a location in Hoover during their current reorganization, easily accessible for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

RIP – Rev. Abraham Woods

Birmingham is mourning the loss of a local civil rights legend as ABC 33/40 is reporting that the Rev. Abraham Woods died a short while ago at Princeton Baptist Medical Center. He was 80 years old.

Change of plans: Wells Fargo’s buying Wachovia

A press release early this morning announced that Wells Fargo was purchasing Wachovia as an intact entity, and avoiding the need for government assistance in the buyout. This is a major change from the word received earlier this week that would have had Wachovia’s retail banking operations purchased by New York-based Citigroup. The new deal is worth $15.1 billion. We’ll update as more information becomes available.

The Encyclopedia of Alabama launches (officially)

Encyclopedia of Alabama logo - Courtesy of websiteWe always plug our relationship with BhamWiki whenever we can. Today there was an official unveiling of what it would be like if the folks at the Wiki ever got a large grant to help supplement it. The Encyclopedia of Alabama was formally launched by Governor Riley today at the Alabama Humanities Foundation Leadership Summit and Awards Luncheon in Hoover (though the site’s been up and active since February). We’re interested in hearing what you think about it – and thanks to GoodCourage for giving up the head’s up. You can always direct message us via Twitter or any of the other contact methods with news tips and story ideas.

WordCamp Birmingham – come on over

Late Friday evening, we announced that we would be serving as an organizing sponsor for WordCamp Birmingham, the first WordCamp that will be held in the Southeastern United States. The conference will take place on September 27 & 28. A quick primer – WordCamps are informal gatherings of WordPress enthusiasts, users and developers to talk the popular, open source software used to run several million blogs and websites (including this one).

I’ve got some interesting reasons for why we’re doing this and if you head over to My Birmingham today, you’ll get to read them all.
