The Weekly’s going to be fine

There are only a few of us that even knew that Creative Loafing, Inc. was a minority owner of one of our local alternatives, Birmingham Weekly, before Tuesday’s report in the Birmingham Business Journal. While “The Loaf” prepares to go through (and hopefully successfully emerge from) Chapter 11 bankruptcy, The Weekly let us know that it’s going to be business as usual and that it should not be affected. If they follow the lead of CL though, we’ll begin to see a migration to an online product in the near future.

A Scrollworks update

For those of you that saw my earlier post on my Birmingham about the problems facing Scrollworks and their benefit event this weekend, we’ve received some great news – word that the bill is now down to $163.

Good news for Scrollworks, who will hopefully see some of you at their event on Saturday night.

Birmingham ranks as a sports-obsessed city

That really shouldn’t come as a big surprise to most folks here in Birmingham, AL. We tied with seven other cities for the honor of the 4th most sports obsessed city in the United States. The other folks with that honor of having 62% of their residents as “very interested” in sports according to the Nielsen report: Green Bay/Appleton, WI; Providence/New Bedford, RI; Denver, CO; Rochester, NY; Louisville, KY; Cleveland/Akron, OH; and San Antonio, TX.

So who’s #1? Well, 66% of Columbus, Ohio’s residents are rabid sports fans apparently.

Birmingham’s revised city-wide curfew goes into effect today. The changes in punishment were recommended by Mayor Larry Langford, in order to address recent crimes involving teenagers. Under the new law, all minors 17 years old and younger must not be on city streets between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on weekdays or between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on weekends. First time offenders will be subject to a fine of $500. Repeat violators must appear in court and subject to higher fines, possible jail time or community service for themselves and their parents. A Community Agreement is ready for Birmingham

We the People, in order to form a more perfect school system…” Those are the words that introduce readers to the Community Agreement developed through the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham‘s  Yes We Can! Birmingham campaign as the result of months of Community Conversations allowing input from residents across the city’s 99 neighborhoods about what they wanted to see for our school system’s children. Approximately 1,800 people participated in the conversations, focused on the following two questions: What kind of community do you envision for the future? and What kind of schools do we need to get us there?

The agreement was unveiled at a gathering held at Vulcan Park this past Saturday morning. It is available as a PDF for you to review and download.

This weekend dozens of people gathered in front of the Alabama Environmental Council‘s (AEC) Recycling  Center downtown to do their part in showing our government and our Presidential candidates that they were ready for the country to focus on the creation of green jobs in support of a green economy. The gathering was part of Green Jobs Now – A Day To Build The New Economy, one of the largest days of citizen action focusing on economic issues and global warming in our nation’s history.
