It’s Tornado Awareness Day in Alabama

nssl0310. NOAA/FlickrThis morning owners of weather radios may have noticed an alert go out at 9 a.m. It was only a test, but it was an important part of the state’s Severe Weather Awareness Week. The 10 a.m. tornado siren will go off. The 9:30 a.m. siren you may have noticed was part of a statewide tornado drill.

The folks at The Weather Channel provide some staggering stats about our 2011 tornado totals, including those associated with the devastation suffered in the region on April 27. They also provide some information about creating a safety plan. There are already predictions for an above average season this year as well.

If you still don’t possess a weather radio, we’re pretty sure you’ve got an opportunity to get one coming your way soon (like maybe even a chance tonight in Pelham).

There will be another opportunity to focus on preparedness next month – according to the National Weather Service, Alabama is observing Flood Awareness Week March 12 – 16.

Election 2012: Remember Dale Peterson? Well, meet Kathy.

Kathy Peterson ad screenshotFrom the sometimes lightning can strike twice category: Some folks may remember the viral phenomenon that was Dale Peterson’s campaign ad as he attempted to secure the Republican nomination for Alabama’s agriculture commissioner in 2010.

He didn’t win, but the video turned him into an Internet sensation; the folks at Funny or Die even created a spoof of the spot, which was covered by both The Huffington Post and New York magazine.

Well, earlier today a Birmingham resident found a video that had already been posted online via various news outlets (including The Gadsden Times and the Montgomery Advertiser). He also just happened to share with the folks at Videogum.

It seems that Perterson’s wife, Kathy, is running to become the state’s Public Service Commission president. That image up and to your left is a still from the two-minute piece that’s currently on YouTube.

We figure a spoof is coming – we’re just waiting to find out when. This is a great excuse though to remind folks that this year’s primary vote will be held on March 13, so don’t forget to register before March 2 (and to vote).

Cruising and guzzling around metro Birmingham

Soho Square development, downtown Homewood. via City-Data.comIt’s time again to take a look at the most walkable cities in the state of Alabama as rated by walkscore.com.

While the 2010 scores were only posted on this site back in mid-December, the new scores were released today and reported on by the Birmingham Business Journal.

Homewood repeats as the state’s most walkable city scoring a respectable 53 – down from last year’s score of 55. Birmingham’s score remained steady at 40. While the score stayed the same, the city is now tied for second statewide with Selma and Florence.

The release of this year’s rankings coincided with the unveiling of an infographic created by online money management service Mint.com earlier this week. It lists Birmingham as the No. 2 Guzzler city among its users, with them averaging $216/month for gas.

We figured we’d do a comparison similar to the one we conducted in December – sharing the average amount spent per month in the cities visited by the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce as part of the B.I.G. trips taken between 2002-2008. They’re again listed in the order they were visited:

  • St. Louis – $136 – Teetotaler
  • Baltimore – $136 – Teetotaler
  • Charlotte – $195 – Guzzler
  • Nashville – $149 – Sipper
  • Pittsburgh – $155 – Sipper
  • Denver – $112 – Teetotaler
  • Austin – $169 – Gulper
It may be helpful to check out how Fast Company’s Co.Design blog presented and interpreted the data – specifically how it related to lists of the best places to live.

Alabama craft brewers talk about Brewery Modernization

We’re still waiting to see if Governor Bentley will be signing the Beer Modernization Act passed last week in Montgomery before the end of the legislative session on Thursday. One group tremendously interested in his decision are those currently operating  craft breweries in the state – and we got a chance to talk to a few of them at Magic City Brewfest last weekend.

Free the Hops is continuing to ask people to contact the Governor’s office to voice their wanting him to sign it into law. We’ll let you know what happens.

Brewery Modernization Act passes Alabama State House

Free The Hops tulip glassBoth of Birmingham, AL’s microbreweries hope to soon enjoy the opportunity to serve their beer on their premises. The Brewery Modernization Act, supported by Free the Hops, passed the Alabama State House of Representatives earlier this evening in Montgomery.

If the State Senate concurs with the substitution made to the bill this evening during their session tomorrow, it will go to Governor Bentley’s desk in Montgomery for his signature.

It had been endorsed by the Alabama Brewers Guild, but also the Alabama Restaurants Association and the Alabama Hospitality Association.

The bill would allow for existing breweries to add tap rooms. It would also make it easier for brewpubs to open in the state, providing opportunities for additional jobs. As reported earlier this month in The Birmingham News, concessions were made to allow for passage that doesn’t necessarily sit well with all parties.

Both of the existing breweries in metro Birmingham, Good People Brewing Co. and Avondale Brewing Co., have the capabilities to be modified to allow for serving beer on their premises.

It’s a little hot in the Magic City this week

Crestwood Park - Pool. Dystopos/FlickrDaytime highs in metro Birmingham will hover in the upper 90s (with heat indices near 100°) for most of the week. The first significant chance for rain currently looks like it won’t arrive until next Sunday.

Luckily there are some options for relief in the city, including possibly cooling off at one of the city’s seventeen swimming pools. Luckily for the folks in Crestwood, theirs is among the ones open on Tuesday.

We’d offer some additional suggestions (as former Timetable contributor Charles Buchanan did back in 2008) but it probably makes more sense to find out what you’re planning to do by having you answer today’s Magic City Question.

Then again, we could always look to our sister city across the pond and see what they’re telling their residents to do (they’ve even got a video cued up about summer safety)…

Travelogue: Lou’s Pub makes Esquire’s list of best bars

Lou's Pub & Package Store logoReaders of the current edition of Esquire Magazine may have recognized the name of a local watering hole included in a very prestigious list of bars. Lou’s Pub not only made the latest installment of the magazine’s list of “The Best Bars in America” (PDF) it did so as the only representative from the state of Alabama.

It’s the second time that the bar has been included on the list – the first being in 2007 (when mental_floss‘ Neely Harris (formerly of mental_flossnow of ESPN The Magazinewrote this piece for the magazine). It’s one of several bars that can claim that designation in Birmingham over the last few years – a list that includes Rojo, The Garage, The Bottletree, and Highlands Bar & Grill.

The full list is also available as well as an interactive map including bars previously on the list on the magazine’s website.
