Go shopping for the AEC

It’s almost lunchtime, so you may be considering where to go for lunch or if you have some time to run some errands. Well if you happen to find yourself at the Whole Foods Market in Mountain Brook (or you’re not sure where to go for lunch, dinner or groceries), 5% of all sales made today out there will go to benefit the Alabama Environmental Council (this also gives you a chance to check out their new website).

Staff and volunteers from the AEC will be on hand to distribute materials (including their brand new stickers) and selling t-shirts among other things. Plus, if you get out there before 3 p.m. you’ll have a chance to drop of e-waste for recycling thanks to the folks at Technical Knock Out.

A rally for green jobs

This weekend dozens of people gathered in front of the Alabama Environmental Council‘s (AEC) Recycling Center downtown to do their part in showing our government and our Presidential candidates that they were ready for the country to focus on the creation of green jobs in support of a green economy. The gathering was part of Green Jobs Now – A Day To Build The New Economy, one of the largest days of citizen action focusing on economic issues and global warming in our nation’s history.

A new look for downtown recycling center

If you look at it now, the property on 25^th Street and 2^nd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham has a few recycling bins, along with a run-down building. However, that area will eventually be transformed into a state of the art recycling center and office building. While it’s still in the early planning stages, the Alabama Environmental Council (AEC) wants to move their state offices into the building’s second floor, and convert the first floor into an educational recycling center. “Signage is going to be very distinct,” says Michael Churchman, AEC executive director. “This is going to be the public face of the council and expose people as to what kind of work we are doing.”

City Stages goes green

recycle logo The Alabama Environmental Council and Waste Management are partnering to encourage attendees to this year’s City Stages festival to recycle. There will be seven (7) recycling stations throughout the festival site (staffed by volunteers in the evenings) asking festival goers to recycle plastic and aluminum cans.

Just keep an eye out for the Think Green t-shirts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings between 6 – 10 p.m. Of course you could win your way in to see what it’s like – your last chance to enter to win two sets of passes to the festival will be at about 5:15 tomorrow afternoon!

XO laptops delivered; what about the boxes?

The first major delivery of XO laptop computers were made to students at Glen Iris Elementary School earlier this week. Approximately 700 computers were distributed. We all know how environmentally friendly the laptops are but what about the packaging?

Well, the Alabama Environmental Council let us know that they recycled 100% of the packaging from the first disbursement of the laptops (including all of these boxes that you’re seeing).
