Fireworks fall on Birmingham

Fireworks from Ruffner Mountain - Bob Farley/f8Photo

The brief rain shower did not keep about a dozen people from watching the fireworks from the quarry overlook at Ruffner Mountain Nature Center Friday night. Not only did the fireworks from Vulcan prove to be entertaining but the Gate City and South East Lake neighborhoods put on a fine show as well.

A “Got plans?” primer for the 4th

Sorry guys and gals. I just spent some time adding items to the Terminal calendar, something I need to do more often (Hint, hint: Submit your events, your friends’ events, even stuff you hear about and I’ll do my best to get the info up somewhat quicker than slower). And I had this nagging feeling that I’d forgotten to do something. And then it hit me, I needed to take out the trash. Then I remembered the mayor gave everyone the day off. But not me. I won’t take the day off from telling you about this weekend; read on.

An extra day off for Birmingham’s librarians

Thanks to our friends at the Birmingham Public Library for forwarding this over to us. Mayor Langford has instructed all City departments and as a result, ALL locations in the city library system will now be closed tomorrow and Friday, resuming their regular schedules on Saturday (so if you were planning on grabbing some books or videos, today would be the day). It will be the first time that the library is not operating during regular business hours on July 3.

Hotel surge hits the city

It’s not like we don’t need the extra rooms in any case, but has anyone else found it just a little weird how many new rooms and renovations have been announced in recent days? We know of at least one guy who’s got to be loving it.

Besides the one linked to the pending purchase of Carraway Medical Center by Shinsegae USA, there’s also the recent opening of one of the new look Microtel properties in Hoover and today’s announcement about the $6.5 million worth of upgrades being made at the Hilton Birmingham Perimeter Park, scheduled for completion in October.

That’s on top of the other lodging projects currently underway known and unknown in the metro Birmingham area, including the Hyatt Place under construction on the city’s Southside (even though it is not listed among ones that will be opening in the near future).
