Jimmie Hale Mission Expands

Birmingham's Jimmie Hale Mission new constructionIt wasn’t big news, but this past spring the Jimmie Hale Mission, one of Birmingham’s most respected men’s missions and shelters, moved to a new location on the former Thomas School grounds on 3420 2nd Avenue North. The building was donated by the city of Birmingham and went through extensive renovation. It now houses 175 beds on 3 floors.

According to Bhamwiki, the mission received a $245,00 federal grant to construct a new chapel and administrative facilities and it looks like they’ve wasted no time getting started. Construction began last week on the new wing of the Shepura Men’s Center as well as a basketball court.

‘Tis a season for children and hope

Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital received a $5,000 gaming system earlier today capable of playing Xbox and Wii™ games courtesy of artist Michael Hunt, former University of Alabama quarterback Jay Barker and a guy who’s already probably given Alabama fans a pretty nice holiday gift already, Nick Saban.

Saban signed 5,000 prints of a lithograph created by Hunt celebrating the history of Alabama football and one of those was presented to the hospital by Barker and Hunt along with the game system earlier today.

The prints are currently available via a special website with a portion of the proceeds going to children’s charities throughout the state, including the hospital. You can visit the site for more information, or just check out the press release.

Stephen Black’s been busy

It’s safe to say that most of our readers probably don’t know who Stephen Black is. That’s fine, since the Anniston Star has just published a great profile of the director of the Center of Ethics and Social Responsibility at the University of Alabama and president and founder of Impact Alabama. Back in November, Black was one of ten recipients of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation National Community Health Leaders Award for the development of the FocusFirst program, leading to additional coverage. You can find out how you can assist with any of the organization’s programs.

Get inked for Pink!

There’s a new non-profit in town and they’re asking you to Get inked for Pink – specifically as it pertains to breast cancer awareness. They’re planning to hold two fundraisers in the coming months (the first is coming up on November 16 at The Bottletree) and have lined up a great stable of sponsors so far for their efforts, not to mention a two-day event being planned at Wicked Ways Tattoo Studio. You’ll also want to check out this video on NBC 13’s website from October. You’ll also want to visit their MySpace profile to learn about how you can get involved.

City employees unload stack of canned food at Boutwell Auditorium Thursday morning as part of the City of Birmingham‘s food drive. They even received a little help from area students yesterday according to The Birmingham News’ breaking news blog.

Tomorrow (Friday) is last day of the drive. All items collected are going to local food banks.

Food bank collection campaign announced

Mayor Langford publicly thanked the city’s employees for the tons (literally) of food that were collected for Haiti recently during his weekly report to the City Council this morning. He then publicly challenged Birmingham’s citizens to do the same for people in their own communities, asking the City Council to declare November 5, 6 and 7 as the dates for a citywide food collection drive and then challenging them and the local business community to match a $10,000 donation from the mayor’s office for the area food banks. The council immediately stepped up to the place.

So after you’ve finished voting for your candidate on Election Day, start preparing to bring non-perishable food items to various locations once details are announced by the mayor’s office.

Blog Action Day 2008

Today is Blog Action Day. It’s a day where bloggers from all backgrounds focus at least one of their posts on a specific topic – this year’s topic is poverty – that will aim to “raise awareness, initiate action and to shake the web!” There are currently just under 12,000 blogs taken part in this (I’ve already written one post on my personal blog; David Griner’s posted as well) and we here at The Terminal wanted to make our readers aware of the day and of some of the organizations or initiatives that you could support in whatever way you can (today and every day). But instead…

We already have one Magic City Question today, but perhaps the idea of this post may generate some more discussion. Which organizations do you currently support that deal with the issue of poverty (on any level) and why? Is there anything else that we can be doing? if you know of other local bloggers that participated, share their links in the comments section as well.
