How can you help Haiti from Birmingham?

PHOTO: House split in half in Haiti. marvinady/twitpicDue to the tragic events that occurred in Haiti’s capitol city in the last 24 hours, a common question is being asked by not just Birmingham, AL residents but everyone is “How can I help?” Well thankfully there are several answers…

Currently 98.7 Kiss FM and WAGG 610 AM is broadcasting from Kelly Ingram Park (across from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute) and they’re collecting any loose change that you may find or have so that it can benefit Transform Haiti and the American Red Cross.

Verizon Wireless has asked customers that want to donate money to the American Red Cross text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to current relief efforts.

MSNBC has created a list of charities that are currently active in Haiti.

If you know of any other ways to help, add them to the comments section below.

Community input sought for conservation plan

Freshwater Land Trust logoDo you have any suggestions for what should be included in a community conservation plan for metro Birmingham?

The Freshwater Land Trust would love to hear from you this afternoon, October 19, (beginning at 4 p.m.) at Vulcan Park.

While we’re thinking of it, now may be a good time to make sure you’re aware of the Land Trust’s ARTSCAPE event, taking place in one month at the Avon Theater in Birmingham’s Lakeview district.

Vote for a Birmingham aha moment

aha moment logoNot sure if you remember back in June when the aha moment tour came to Birmingham, AL… Well, now they’ve posted the 75 semi-finalist videos on the project’s official website for consideration. We’ve got until October 15 to make sure that at least one of three videos filmed here in Birmingham is chosen as one of the top 25 finalists. The top 10 chosen from those finalists will be used in Mutual of Omaha’s 2010 television campaign. Thanks to Chris Osborne, one of the subjects of the three videos, for sharing the information earlier this month via Twitter.

Looks like we’ve got some videos to watch soon…

Fifteen blogs have participated so far in The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham‘s inaugural Blogging Against Violence online event – that we know of. For those who didn’t see it, here’s the post that I wrote last week and here’s how we announced it on the site. This is a reminder that anyone that is interested may write posts and let them know that you’ve written one until this Thursday, October 15.

Incidentally, The Women’s Fund is the subject of an article in Monday morning’s Birmingham News about its programs and direction.

Vote for the Junction… cause it matters

Tuxedo Junction photoThe folks over at Main Street Birmingham (MSB) submitted a photo taken in front of the Nixon Building in Birmingham’s Ensley community as one of the 1,900 entries in this year’s National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Places That Matter Photo Contest. The photo is the latest piece in a campaign to raise funds for the renovation of the building into a cultural center for the community and the region.

Yesterday it was announced that the photo was picked to be one of the 12 finalists! You’ve got until October 9 to sign up and vote once-per-day for the photo.

MSB’s got additional instructions on their website as well as a rendering of what the completed project will look like when completed.

Just in case you’re interested, here’s the link to photos and descriptions of all the finalists.

A Picture of Health atop the Redmont tonight

healthposterIf you’re still looking for something to do this evening, Birmingham Bombshells is holding a pretty nice party tonight atop the historic Redmont Hotel in downtown Birmingham, AL. The event, A Picture of Health, is a benefit to raise money for ovarian cancer research and in particular the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation. It starts at 7 p.m. and it gives you a chance to enjoy one of the most breathtaking views of The Magic City while dressing up in 1940s-era glamour and bid on items as part of the “Every Girl’s Fantasy” auction.

There are still tickets available, at least you’ve got until 5 p.m. to purchase them in advance. We’d love to hear that they sold out tonight…
