East Lake wants to stay weird

A call has been sent out to all artists, musicians, poets, prose, and liberal thinkers to “…relocate and create our own Art’s District here in the shadows of Birmingham.” The Keep East Lake Weird and East Lake Arts District movements have Yahoo Groups that have been in existence for at least the last year. Organizers are attempting to leverage the development of an artists community among the area’s 1920s era bungalows with the potential revitalization of the community’s downtown area – the blocks near 1st Avenue North and Oporto-Madrid Blvd.

AL.com’s got some new online digs

aldotcom

They’ve been getting those of us throughout the state ready for it for weeks, and this afternoon, AL.com’s new design was launched. Before the critics point this out, yes, you can find a similar look on other sites associated with them, including nj.com. Now with that out of the way…

Click on the screenshot to head on over there (or here) and take a look around.

Birmingham Times site gets redesigned

It was bound to happen… The South’s largest Black newspaper (Birmingham-based) has updated their website and we think it looks pretty good. Here’s the link to the new Birmingham Times site – go check it out and share your thoughts.

A local Tweetup group? Maybe…

A local user of Twitter has taken it upon himself to create a group on Facebook for folks in town who use the popular microblogging service. He’s also called a Tweetup for December 29 at Urban Standard from 4-6 p.m. So if you can escape work early that first day after the Christmas holiday, you may want to go on over, check it out and let us know how it goes.

BTW, We’ll have information about our first Terminally Happy Hour of the New Year (on January 8) available soon – plenty of time to wind down from the long holiday season.

Dean and Co. invade the interwebs

So, those of us that have cable service here in Birmingham, AL are familiar, or at least know about Dean and Company. They’ve been on television for 30 years and now they’ve got a website. They were on Rick and Bubba this morning to formally launch it and It’s just as off the wall and… well, you go ahead and take a look for yourselves.

The Caputo Report has arrived

The Birmingham blogosphere is always growing, and recently we’ve seen some interesting additions to the mix. One of them is The Caputo Report, written by our regional Chamber of Commerce‘s vice president of public policy, Pascal Caputo.

The first official blog from the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce has hit the ground running having just completed a poll about the necessity of a county manager for Jefferson County. The chamber has been supporting this initiative for some time, including a bill introduced in Montgomery earlier this year. It’ll be interesting to see how the Chamber uses this tool in the future.

Not a lot of Shelby fans in Michigan

Even with the Treasury Department reportedly sorting through the potential of a automotive bailout package courtesy of the White House, there are apparently a few folks in Michigan who aren’t too pleased with the gentleman representing our state in Washington. Boycott Alabama Now is a website calling for a financial boycott of the state of Alabama to prove a point to U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (although they are saying that they’re not holding a grudge against those of us that work and live here).

Hasn’t this gotten just a little too crazy?
