What’s IN?

This is a call to arms for Birmingham fans and those who want to show others what this city is all about. About the good things IN Birmingham.

So often we hear people being negative about our town. People who say, ‘there’s nothing to do in this town’ – clearly have not been paying attention or reading Christina‘s posts over on Timetable. But this is our chance to give a voice to the quieter majority who know there are great places to eat, drink, or just hangout in Birmingham.

Our convention and visitors bureau, along with other groups like the chamber of commerce, are collecting nominations for what YOU think are the best spots IN town. Your favorite IN spots. At the end of the nomination process (read: the end of JUNE!) we will make a book, a Zagat-style guide to Birmingham based on your input.

So click here to nominate your favorite spot. You don’t have much time left.

I’ll be hopping on The Terminal every Wednesday to showcase a different IN spot up until the book is out, so stay tuned!

Fresh Ground Comics, Safari Cup Coffee

We figured it’d be best to use the words of the FGC to describe the event as it’s the best:

For those who know us, good to see you again, for those who don’t, we provide the finest alternative, lactose and gluten free stand-up comedy you can buy. We’re returning to Safari Cup Coffee to kick off the first of our monthly shows. So after you hit all the art galleries that night, stop by for some stand-up comedy with Birmingham’s funny people. Funny ha-ha or funny strange? Most times both!

Cost: $5; $3 w/student I.D.

Location:
Safari Cup Coffee
300 Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd., North

Facebook watch: Let’s get This American Lifed

We’ve been noticing the increasing number of groups being created in Facebook (and frankly a lot more traffic there too). We thought it would be a good idea to start taking a look at some of the local groups that are popping up on Facebook.

This first one is tied to a national phenomenon, or at least to one that will be. Chicago Public Radio’s This American Life is preparing to produce a stage show and broadcast it live, via satellite, to theaters across the country. There’s more information about the event available from the show’s website. So why not create a group on Facebook that encourages folks to take the survey and make sure that people know we want to have a local theater involved?

Well, the votes have been counted and it looks like we were able to get some since the Regal Cinemas 16 in Trussville will one of the more than 300 theaters nationwide participating on May 1 at 7 p.m. CDT. Tickets go on sale TODAY online.

Come Out and Play Game Shows, Java and Jams

Come on down! Downtown that is to the 2nd Game Show Night Thursday at Java & Jams. Get more information and a description of the games at the Come Out and Play Game Shows website.

Hicks takes to the hardcourt this weekend

Taylor Hicks - MySpace photoMembers of Taylor Hicks’ Soul Patrol need only look to cable television network ESPN this weekend tonight to catch a glimpse of the season 5 American Idol winner. He’s playing to a sold out audience, only it’s a crowd of basketball fans hoping for a great show. Hicks will be suiting up for the New Orleans team in this year’s NBA McDonald’s All-Star Celebrity Game. Tip off is 6 p.m. local time.

Before you think about hopping a flight or the train to get down there and catch a glimpse, tickets are already sold out. Plus, Hicks was apparently a point guard in high school, so it’s not impossible to think of him dishing it to Master P or WNBA star Ruth Riley.

Magic City Question: So Idol starts tonight… you gonna watch?

That would seem to be the $1 million question. The two-hour premiere will no doubt get some viewers, but we want to know if the home of Idols will watch this season? One person’s opinion is that American Idol has finally jumped the shark
