Larry Langford, with 100% of the precincts reporting, has collected 170 more votes than necessary to win the election outright, but unofficially. Langford received 10,835 more votes than Birmingham lawyer Patrick Cooper. 52,111 votes were cast in the 2007 mayoral election.

The totals as previously mentioned are currently unofficial. Patrick Cooper does plan to call for a recount.

The question now is whether or not there will be a run-off or not. Earlier this evening, this was the scene at Bottletree as voters began to await the results.

We’ll continue to monitor and provide coverage as the night continues.

Election ’07: Early reports suggest problems

There are reports on al.com and bulletins being sent through MySpace saying that voters have been experiencing problems on Birmingham’s east side when attempting to vote in the city’s mayoral election today.

We would like to know if you had any problems when going to vote today. We’d ask that you post a comment to this post. We’d also suggest contacting The Jefferson County Board of Registrars number at 325.5550. With this being a municipal election, the county is the contact and not the state.

Check in with us later on.

City’s 64th homicide in Glen Iris

Birmingham’s 64th homicide of the year has been confirmed. The story has been developing since early this morning, with most of the major news outlets following it. All of the mainstream media outlets are reporting that the 20-year old UAB student was found this morning in the parking lot adjacent to Glen Iris Elementary School shot to death. Here is the account on the Birmingham News breaking news blog.

The recent surge of crime was the focus of the current issue of Black & White (available on newsstands through the 17th). Claims that our crime numbers are down are true, but the difference between the old numbers and the current numbers can be considered disturbing. It’s also been disturbing to read what some people are saying as a result of this most recent tragedy. (UPDATE: 1:57 a.m.; comments have been removed from the post.) What are your thoughts?

Election ’07: A different perspective on Larry, and everybody else

Kyle Whitmire over at Birmingham Weekly has written an extensive article about Larry Langford in this week’s edition. The piece takes a look primarily at his political career, with extensive focus on VisionLand (now Alabama Adventure) and recent personal problems.

It’s definitely an interesting time to run this piece, especially considering that the next Weekly will not hit the streets until after we’ve either determined a clear winner or at least know who’s got two more weeks of campaigning ahead of them in this year’s race to the mayor’s office.

This is of course not including the outrage over a political cartoon published in The Birmingham News Tuesday that has been viewed as an attack on both Langford and Kincaid, the last minute entries into the mayoral commercial campaign by Kincaid and Bell, the pronouncement about race being a major issue in the election or the interesting response given by Cooper about Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin endorsing the incumbent and holding a fundraiser for him on Wednesday morning.

Business is definitely about to pick up…
