Three Birmingham area residents are in pretty select company.
Yesterday Alabama Power CEO Charles McCrary, Vulcan Materials CEO Donald James and Birmingham restaurateur Frank Stitt were among five individuals inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor during a ceremony in the old House chamber at the Alabama Capitol.
According to the Associated Press report, “…membership in the academy is limited by law to 100 people whose accomplishments and service have greatly benefited the state.”

Folks who’ve lived in Birmingham for a long time may remember Jinx in Birmingham’s Five Points South commercial district. Its ecclectic atmosphere made it one of the shopping district’s most popular stores.
Well its owner, Chatham Hellmers, has decided to open a store in one of the city’s trendiest new spots – 2nd Avenue North between 23rd and 24th Streets downtown (2329 2nd Avenue North to be exact). The new venture, called Charm (here’s the fan page on Facebook), opened this morning. She’s hoping that some of you will stop by this evening for a minute to say hello and to check out the charms and other pieces available for purchase. The Community Entrepreneurial Institute (CEI) will unveil its newest program, the Urban Business Incubator, with an open house/celebration this evening starting at 5 p.m. at its home in the A.G. Gaston Building in Birmingham’s historic Civil Rights District. The program will, according to CEI’s founder Dr. Karen Starks, “provide entrepreneurs with the resources necessary to start and create a sustainable company.” Urbanham.com has additional information about tonight’s event, including how interested parties can submit an application. Yesterday evening a large crowd gathered at The Club for the launch of the Birmingham Business Alliance, the organization resulting from the merger of the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Metropolitan Development Board. The entity’s president and CEO, Dalton Smith, shared the vision and mission of the BBA with those in attendance.
They’ve also wasted little time in setting up additional avenues through which the new organization can share information, including a new fan page on Facebook launched yesterday during the event.

Pascal Caputo has served as the vice president of public policy for the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce for nearly two years. For the last seven months he has shared posts on The Caputo Report, a blog that became a valuable tool for the organization in terms of sharing perspectives on Chamber-related issues.
Well, beginning with this post filed on Saturday, the blog is now reflecting only the opinions of Mr. Caputo as he prepares to leave the Chamber in advance of the soon to be reorganized Chamber (their merger with the Metropolitan Development Board will be complete later this summer). We’re joining Birmingham Weekly in reporting that The Birmingham News has made an additional 7% average reduction in salaries for its full-time employees. They also announced the closure of all suburban news bureaus by September and layoffs of some part-time employees, though there are no additional furloughs expected for now.
We also learned that employees at The Anniston Star and its subsidiairies found out that they would also be experiencing a 10% reduction in salary, just days after launching its new website.
