Magic City Question: Birmingham’s Person of the Year

This morning we learned that Vladimir Putin is Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. We figured since it is that time of year when people begin to create “best of” lists, we’d start by asking you who you thought Birmingham’s Person of the Year would be in 2007?

The Birmingham City Council delayed its decision on whether or not to tear down Boutwell Auditorium for four (4) weeks while they collect data to determine the next steps. Something else to consider – what happens to that mural that currently graces the eastern wall of the 83-year old building when the building comes down?

Next April’s ONB Magic City Art Connection was ranked one of the top 20 events to attend for that month by the Atlanta-based Southeast Tourism Society, which could lead to a larger crowd than normal for the festival, which is scheduled to be celebrating its 25th anniversary, thanks to the extra media coverage that the designation carries.

Tomorrow morning President Bush will sign a law passed by Congress increasing automobile fuel economy for the first time in 32 years. The new bill will require that an auto maker’s fleet fuel efficiency go from 25 to 35 miles per gallon by 2010.

UPDATE: 12.17.2007, 8:45 p.m., Bloomberg News’ updated post has additional information.

There are reports that the Securities and Exchange Commission has asked a federal judge to compel Birmingham mayor Larry Langford to testify as part of a continuing investigation after the mayor testified before the commission last week and did not answer questions, citing “privileges and a ‘right under the United States Constitution” as his reasons.

According to this report filed earlier this afternoon, no comment has been released as of yet from the mayor’s office.

Election ’07: Cooper drops Birmingham mayoral challenge

We figured you’d already heard, but here’s how The Birmingham News and NBC13 covered this morning’s press conference. Cooper had been planning to file an appeal of an earlier decision involving his challenge to the results of the October mayoral election.

Do Dah Day’s looking for 2008 T-shirt design

2007 Do Dah Day designThey’ve put out a call to artists in print (here’s the link to their site, though there is currently no mention of the open call there). You’ve got until Friday, January 11 to get in your design for the 2008 Do Dah Day t-shirt. Anyone seeking additional information should email dodahdayart@bellsouth.net. There are some requirements, including:

  • Inclusion of one dog and one cat in design
  • Saying this year’s festival date (May 17, 2008)
  • Must be four-color art
  • Say “In support of local animal shelters”
  • Say Birmingham, AL
  • have their website – dodahday.org – somewhere in the design

You won’t get paid, at least not monetarily; you will be able to get stuff with your logo on it and the thanks of members of their board, sponsors and four-legged friends all over metro Birmingham.

Jr. Patrons’ Roman Holiday, WorkPlay Theatre

The Junior Patrons of the Birmingham Museum of Art are hosting a Roman Holiday, inspired by the ongoing Pompeii exhibit currently on display downtown. The dressy casual affair will feature a silent auction where attendees can bid on olive jars designed by local artists as well as a few folks whose names you might know – Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston and Eva Longoria. Heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and music by The Lava Lamps round out the fun.

Cost: $20 in advance; $25 at the door. Tickets may be purchased on the museum’s website.
