Election ’07: Early reports suggest problems

There are reports on al.com and bulletins being sent through MySpace saying that voters have been experiencing problems on Birmingham’s east side when attempting to vote in the city’s mayoral election today.

We would like to know if you had any problems when going to vote today. We’d ask that you post a comment to this post. We’d also suggest contacting The Jefferson County Board of Registrars number at 325.5550. With this being a municipal election, the county is the contact and not the state.

Business district will see finally see Starbucks

Harbert Realty Services and Concord Hospitality announced earlier this morning that Birmingham’s new Marriott Renaissance Hotel (being built in the City Center at 5th Avenue North and 20th Street) will also be home to a brand-new Starbucks Coffee location.

The Starbucks store will be a convenience for hotel guests and surrounding businesses. It will be interesting to see how their arrival, though still some time off, will affect the business of our current crop of downtown coffeehouses, most notably Java and Jams, who only recently opened in June.

The downtown area’s newest coffeehouse is located one block south of the proposed Starbucks location, which would be the 20th in the metropolitan area based on current numbers and the 5th for Birmingham city center area.
