5th annual Art in Avondale Park, Avondale Park

This event keeps getting bigger and better. Come to the corner of 41st Street South and 5th Avenue South with the kids for an art-filled day in the park. There will be lots of hands-on activities, pony rides, music and dance, booths full of well-known and emerging artists, and a silent auction featuring work by Larry Langford, Birmingham’s mayor-elect. One of the event’s highlights is the children’s parade at 10:30 a.m. The parade leaves Avondale Elementary and takes a route through Forest Park Village, down 39th Street and into the park. These kids are cute so come cheer them on. The fun continues after 4 when the Avondale Business District opens its doors for an evening Open House Tour featuring food, entertainment, prizes, hayrides and carriage rides. Rain date is October 28. You can find more information and pictures from last year, here.

Don’t have weekend plans yet?

Well, it’s Friday, which means that Christina’s got some ideas for you over on Timetable, including a couple of reasons to venture into the city center and one reason to consider fighting traffic tomorrow even if you’re not going to the game.

Got plans this weekend?

Sure it’s the big race weekend in Talladega. But we know that not everyone’s eyes will be on the first Car of Tomorrow run at the superspeedway. There is a ton of “cultural” stuff to do around town Saturday and Sunday. Here’s just the ones we know about. We miss something? Share the 411 with an e-mail to info@bhamterminal.com.

More after the jump…

A look around the station: The Loaf likes Charles’ comments

They at least like them enough to link to this post over on my Birmingham. Charles Buchanan’s comments come after a visit two weekends ago to our neighbor to the east and AndrĂ©’s piece on urban fabric. It’s an interesting piece and they’re taking a look at it today, so why don’t you?

NOTE: Charles is a regular contributor to the site, normally over on Timetable and the guy who came up with the cool Terminal Station print for the site.

Speaking of Timetable, we’re trying to play catch up to all of the things going on around town. We’re also wanting to shine a spotlight on one local artist’s attempts to expand our city’s reviews of art shows. M. Blue Horn has begun posting podcasts to her personal site and… well head on over and find out.

Kori Newkirk lecture, Mary Hulsey Recital Hall (UAB)

The Bronx, NY born native will be giving a lecture as part of his five-day visit to the UAB campus beginning at 6 p.m. on September 27 at Mary Hulsey Recital Hall (directions). He is this year’s UAB Department of Art and Art History’s 2007 Jack Drake Visiting Artist.

Click here to read more about his upcoming visit and his background over on the Timetable blog.

For more information, call the department at 205-934-4941.

Magic City Question: Your comments about Jeffco budget cuts

The Jefferson County Commission passed their fiscal 2008 budget today. The $660 million budget cuts $23 million total for the arts (notably the Cultural Alliance) and currently vacant county positions. The Birmingham News Breaking News blog has a brief post about the vote, which was along party lines.

What are your thoughts about the budget and what it means?

The talk around Artwalk 2007

Artwalk Winddown

It’s been over for a couple of days now, but there’s still a great deal of buzz about this year’s Artwalk. Early reports have total artists sales double that from last year.

We wanted to hear what you thought about this year’s festival, so we sent out a street team (with our new t-shirts on of course), asked for your thoughts and brought these back to share with you.
