The talk around Artwalk 2007

Artwalk Winddown

It’s been over for a couple of days now, but there’s still a great deal of buzz about this year’s Artwalk. Early reports have total artists sales double that from last year.

We wanted to hear what you thought about this year’s festival, so we sent out a street team (with our new t-shirts on of course), asked for your thoughts and brought these back to share with you.

Terminal T is now on sale!

Terminal T Shirt Front

Well, we promised you that you’d be able to buy our first ever t-shirt beginning this morning… and here it is!

Using the phrase from a popular 1961 image campaign, the shirt also sports our logo on the back. Clicking here or on the image of the shirt will get you started with the process, thanks to the guys over at GoodStorm.

“Celebration of Mothers and Daughters,” Workplay

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Start it off right by joining the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama for its third annual “Celebration of Mothers and Daughters” concert Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Workplay Theater. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s not just for women. Everyone is welcome. The event features award-winning Alabama singer-songwriter Mae Robertson along with Birmingham guitarist Jim Ohlschmidt. The night starts off with a cocktail reception in the bar from 5:30-6:30 p.m with hors d’oeuvres by The Fish Market. The event is sponsored by Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell and Berkowitz, PC. All proceeds will be donated to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center to fund labs and research. For more information, call (205) 871-4653 or (205) 996-5463.

Cost: Tickets are $50 each and 100% tax deductible. Limited seating.

While you won’t necessarily see this really cool festival staple today, you will get a chance to see (& get) some great art at this year’s Artwalk festival, going on until 6 p.m. Those that are wanting a taste of the festival, head on over to Timetable to see some images from last night.

For those of you a little hungry, there’s also the National Soul Food Cook-Off taking place at Boutwell Auditorium this afternoon.

The quotes go up tomorrow morning and the t-shirts go on sale Monday!

The Week in Review starts tomorrow

The staff is about to volunteer their time down at Artwalk this evening, both for the festival as well as serving as a street team both tonight and tomorrow. There will be a recap of the days events beginning at 10 p.m. (yeah, we know it sounds like the big boys on TV). We’ll also be posting stories that didn’t make it on the site this week tomorrow, even though we know that most of you will be watching football (we’ll feel better catching up).

Just a reminder that if you happen to see a couple of folks coming towards you with a “It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham” shirt on, it’s probably a member of the street team and your chance to win one of those very same t-shirts before we start selling them on the site next week. Keep your eyes open.

Magic City Question: What’s your favorite locally owned spot?

There have been several national chains that have recently announced plans to expand or reopen in the Birmingham metropolitan area. That’s a good thing as it shows how people outside the region view the economic climate in the area. But we’re a local website, so what we’d like to know is, what’s your favorite locally owned business and why?

Schlotzsky’s Originals all over town

Schlotzsky’s LogoThe list of national and regional food chains expanding into the region keeps on growing. Schlotzsky’s has announced that they will be adding eight more locations to the Birmingham market by 2012. The Birmingham Business Journal has more information about the announcement from the Austin, TX-based company. We started a list of national retail chains that people may want to see come to town in the comments section of the Einstein Bros. post. Add some more if you want to, but we’re looking forward to seeing your answers to this week’s Magic City Question…

(NOTE: We’d come up with a cool name for this string of posts, but we haven’t thought of one for it yet. If you do, go ahead and send it in.)
