Election ’07: The first “major” forum is tonight!

We’re looking forward to this evening’s mayoral forum at WorkPlay. You can check out this Election ’07 calendar entry to find out more details about this evening’s event at WorkPlay.

Our plan (or André’s plan) is to hang out in the bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. He may even have some t-shirts to give away this evening to those that can spot him (not that spotting André working on a laptop during happy hour in a bar is that hard).

He’ll be collecting your comments about the forum and sharing them on the site. So check in with him when you get there this evening.

Oh yeah, and check out his quotes in this morning’s Birmingham News article about young professionals’ interest in this election.

The Southern Heritage Festival… in September?

That’s right; this year’s festival would be held on September 1 & 2. There has been a lot of chatter wondering if the event would be held this year. A resolution approving a contract with the Birmingham African American Arts and Heritage Foundation is included as a consent item on this morning’s City Council agenda (page 23, Item 9). If approved, the $35,000 contract would call for the Foundation to “produce and present the 2007 Southern Heritage Festival.”

There is no confirmation of an event location or lineup, though last year’s festival was held on the site of the Railroad Reservation Park in downtown Birmingham.

Election ’07: Speaking of Catalyst…

We’re going to share all of the questions that are submitted to us for our candidates series to Catalyst for consideration to be used during the September 18 mayoral debate they are hosting with the League of Women Voters of Greater Birmingham at WorkPlay Theater. If you have not submitted a question us to consider using for our series, click here to submit them.

You may also click here to find out a little more about it. We plan on sharing some more information about our series soon. Stay tuned.

Catalyst & United Way Young Leaders invite you to make a Board Connection next week

Catalyst Logo United Way Logo Nrca Logo

Catalyst and United Way Young Leaders Society are partnering with the Nonprofit Resource Center of Alabama (NRCA) to provide a great opportunity to our YP community.

Next Wednesday, August 8, they’re inviting those interested to come out to WorkPlay to learn more about how to make a Board Connection with area nonprofits seeking new blood. We’ve even got the PDF file for you to download and share with your friends.

Sam Davidson’s in town tonight

Sam DavidsonSam Davidson is in town this evening at WorkPlay. According to the Remarkablog, he’ll be here in Birmingham beginning at 5 p.m. to meet and talk with folks (and hand out swag). Davidson is the president and co-founder of CoolPeopleCare and the creator of the Remarkablog. The blog focuses on telling stories about remarkable people, places and things. The site gives people great ideas to make a difference in five minutes or less everyday. They are one of the inspirations behind what we’d like to become here in the community: a way to find out what’s going on and how to do and not just say. We’re hoping that one or two of us will be able to show up later on in the evening.

We normally don’t just say “go,” but this is one you should consider.

Random Shots: Christmas in July at Workplay

Workplay Christmas In July

Considering how hot its been around here, it’s nice to have a reminder of the cooler weather that’s supposed to be coming later this year. It’s also a great reminder about this Saturday’s Christmas in July event, organized by YP Birmingham and WorkPlay.
