It’s a busy time of the year at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Now on the walls in advance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 21) is Images of Martin Luther King Jr. from the collection of Paul R. Jones. Another way the BRCI is getting ready is by holding a volunteer orientation session Saturday (January 12) from 2 – 4 p.m. BCRI will be free and open to the public on MLK Day and they need extra hands to help with the crowds. If you’d like to help, give LaQuita M. Singleton a call today at 328-9696, ext. 204 for more information.

Got plans this weekend? 1.4 – 1.6
If your New Year’s resolution is to put more culture in your life, Birmingham is not that bad of a place to be. Take for example, tonight and Saturday at 8 you can see the Alabama Symphony Orchestra perform at the Alys Stephens Center.
Fancy description:
“From dark to light, Justin Brown and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra explore the contrasting works of two of the most influential Russian composers. Virtuoso Vadim Gluzman plays Shostakovich’s passionate and soulful Violin Concerto No. 1, and Maestro Brown follows Tchaikovsky’s troubled but ultimately life-affirming Symphony No. 5.”
Translation: Good stuff. For tickets, give them a call at 251-7727. Cost: $65 to $10.
If that’s not enough culture for you then Saturday is the very last day to see the “Roger Brown: Southern Exposure” exhibit. More after the jump: Continue reading

Got plans this weekend? 12.28 – 12.30
Well here it is, the last weekend of the year. After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, my suggestion for this weekend is to not make plans. Or if you do, make them with yourself.
Reflect on your accomplishments for the year. Decide your goals for the next.
Is there something you have been putting off? Take the first step toward getting it done.
Call a friend that you may not have gotten to see during the holidays.
Relax. Watch some football if that’s your thing (maybe that NFL game on Saturday). Or take a walk if you like being one with nature. Just relax.
But if you must have a suggestion for something to do today, don’t wait any longer to make dinner reservations for New Year’s Eve. Sure it’s not Valentine’s Day, but area restaurants are bound to be busier than usual. A reservation can’t hurt.
If you’ve got other ideas, let us know in the comments section… Happy New Year!

Got plans this weekend? 12.21 – 12.23
This edition of Got plans really should have a subtitle – what to do with all that family coming in town. With Christmas on a Tuesday this year, many people are starting their celebrations as soon as they get off work tonight. If it’s your turn to host the out-of-towners, don’t fear. There is more to do than look at the naked guy on the mountain.
Idea One: Holiday movies at the Alabama Theatre, located at 1811 Third Ave. North in downtown Birmingham. Friday night (7 p.m.) watch the cat fry in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) see three holiday cartoon favorites — “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town.” Saturday night (7 p.m.) dream of “snow, snow, snow” with Bing and Rosemary in “White Christmas.” Tickets are $7 for adults/$6 for senior citizens and children under 12. Available at the box office one hour before showtime.

Got plans this weekend? 12.14 – 12.16
Baby it’s cold(er) outside. Just in time for the Zoolight Safari at the Birmingham Zoo. I like Christmas, I like the holiday season and I really, REALLY like me some lights, which means I’m so going to the zoo like a dozen times starting tonight. And I can because it’s open 15 nights – December 14-23 and 26-30 from 5-9 p.m. Besides the half a million lights, there’s a light show with music, crafts for the kids at the Barn in the Children’s Zoo, Santa and snow. Snow? Yes, the zoo claims to be “the only place in Birmingham where it snows every night.” That I’ve got to see. And since I’m going to want to see it again and again, it’s a good thing I’m a member. Members get in free, so now is a great time to join and support your local zoo. Regular admission is $7 and everyone pays to ride the train.
Here’s some fine print: The zoo will be closing at 4 p.m. on Zoolight Safari days. Animal exhibits will be closed during the event. Continue reading

Got plans this weekend? 12.7 – 12.9
This week I am relying on the kindness of strangers. Strangers that have e-mailed about theater. So . . .
You can see “Simple Gifts” by the Red Mountain Theatre Company at their own Red Mountain Cabaret in the basement of the old Kress building (301 19th St. North, downtown). Here’s what RMTC has to say about it
“Bringing you the best of RMTC’s original holiday productions, Simple Gifts pays tribute to past classics, highlights new performances and combines our greatest musical moments into one delightful treat! Enjoy your favorite holiday hits in this cheerful celebration that is sure to spread the humor and heart of the season. Join us an hour before each Friday and Saturday performance for pre-show music by the Youth Programs, a cash bar and yummy Cabaret snacks.”
Holiday bonus: Santa will make an appearance before the Saturday and Sunday shows to visit with young guests. Tickets are $30. You can catch the show through Dec. 16. Thursday-Saturday, 7:30 p.m./Sunday matinee, 2:00 p.m.
