That new radio station’s good

Whitney had some fun covering the launch of Live 100.5 FM on Friday, and the station’s been having fun getting established in town. They’ve already got a Facebook group (remember, you’ve got to have a Facebook account to see it – and 185 folks have already found it), a live stream of the station available on the station’s website and (in case you missed it) Matt over at AL.com’s got the first 15 songs ever played so you’re ready for that quiz that will inevitably come up.

From JOX to R.E.M.: 100.5 FM’s change

Whitney and her guest contributor pal Arik Sokol are here to clue you in on this morning’s transition on 100.5FM from a sports format to “alternative rock”.

Why do I hear TOBY KEITH? KIIIIIIDDING.

So, as of 10:05am this morning, 100.5 is now Live100.5, Birmingham’s modern music complete with an opening setlist featuring REM’s Radio Free Europe (because that’s modern, in a classical sense) and Death Cab for Cutie’s I Will Possess Your Heart.

New 100.5FM format drops at 10:05 Friday AM

Scott Register of Reg’s Coffee House posted a note on his Facebook profile at 6:01 p.m. this evening (Monday) letting folks know that he’s doing a special edition of the popular radio show this Friday, August 15, from 7 a.m. – 10:05 a.m (clever).

According to the post, the new station format will be unveiled at the end of the broadcast.

We’ll just have to stay tuned…

UPDATE: The carousel continues with shuffling dial positions

WJOX's new logo - radio station's websiteUPDATE, 3;45 p.m., 7.23.2008: Word’s come in from Scott Register himself that Reg’s Coffee House will be broadcasting from 100.5 FM beginning this Sunday, July 27. Spread the word!

If you haven’t figured it out, WJOX has shifted its FM frequency to the spot formerly occupied by Y94.5 FM. While the site had not been completely redirected as of yet, the sports station’s website has already been rebranded complete with a redesigned station logo. We’re still not quite sure what’s going to happen to the frequency that once housed The X; it appears that they don’t know either as tuning your radio to the station (if you still do that) points you to a spot where signals sound like they’re crossed right now.

Y94.5, we hardly knew thee…

Y94.5 FM logo - courtesy of MySpace profileYou can definitely tell that we took the weekend off when we miss a Radio Carousel story! The switch apparently took place shortly after Y94.5‘s simulcast of this year’s Thunder on The Mountain festivities. BTW, the website’s currently under construction. There is speculation all over the web as to what’s going to happen next. Wikipedia is currently saying that it’s gone country (though they’re currently simulcasting WJOX today) and Alabama Media Buzz is suggesting that it could be switching to an adult contemporary hits format.

The good news is that no matter what, we can count on Reg broadcasting next Sunday (at least that’s the word from the man himself courtesy of his Facebook account.

So, you still miss Beaner & Ken huh?

Well you can always let them know just how much Birmingham does! For those of you that didn’t know, Beaner & Ken (well, at least Ken) still maintain a website/blog tied to their former #1 morning show. The show was canceled in mid-December 2006 as part of what I still call our local Radio Carousel.

While still on their extended “vacation” they’re staying pretty active: Beaner’s vlogging (video blogging) for blogtv.com and Ken’s still in The Magic City playing in a band called More Cowbell. So show them some love and send them an email; it may end up in their fan mail section
