Langford to suggest support for zoo expansion

Trails of Africa logoThis morning during Mayor Langford‘s  comments to the Birmingham City Council, he announced plans to present a proposed redevelopment agreement to councilors next week that would allow the Birmingham Zoo to begin work on its long planned expansion called Trails of Africa.

The mayor reported that the zoo, which is currently the state of Alabama’s #1 tourist attraction, has already raised more than $6 million for the 14-acre expansion but needs additional financial support to make it a reality. A report in The Birmingham News from September 2007 had zoo officials estimating the overall cost of the project at $15 million.

The City of Birmingham owns the zoo, but the property is operated by an independent 501©3 organization.

Time for a Bojangles biscuit run…

… much closer to home. Charlotte, NC-based Bojangle’s has announced plans to expand into the Birmingham, AL market, with hopes of opening four (4) locations in the metro area before the end of the year. We here see this as a great excuse to eat breakfast whenever we want, and that’s important, even to their corporate office, especially when you take a look at their recipe for success.

Children’s Hospital broke ground last week on its new expansion facility on Birmingham’s Southside, one that will allow them to commit to being a greener part of our regional community. As part of the effort to make folks aware of the expansion of the hospital as part of the insitution’s “Keeping Promises” fundraising campaign, folks can keep up with the construction via webcam as well as see what the completed project will look like and be kept aware of road closings and events associated with it.

We’ll try to remind you from time to time to check in as well.

It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas

So, you’ve already noticed the holiday music on Magic 96 and its website and the decorations out in stores. New to the “we haven’t even hit Thanksgiving but it’s Christmastime” file is the expansion of The Christmas Carolers into metro Birmingham and six other markets. So if you see some folks looking like they stepped out of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at your holiday party this year, that’s why.

Sweet Bones Alabama to open in The Summit

I really can’t be sure if the guys on the trailer were up here working preparing to work on the restaurant (I actually think some patch work was being done to their truck). I can be sure of the fact that it was just ironic timing based on what ran in today’s Birmingham News about Bonedaddy’s – sorry, soon to be Sweet Bones Alabama.

That’s right – according to today’s News’ business section the restaurant located in the Village at Lee Branch will be changing it’s name,  relocating to larger space at The Summit (the former On the Border location pictured above) and working on plans to open locations outside of Alabama.
