Follow the progress of a “promise”

Children’s Hospital broke ground last week on its new expansion facility on Birmingham’s Southside, one that will allow them to commit to being a greener part of our regional community. As part of the effort to make folks aware of the expansion of the hospital as part of the insitution’s “Keeping Promises” fundraising campaign, folks can keep up with the construction via webcam as well as see what the completed project will look like and be kept aware of road closings and events associated with it.

We’ll try to remind you from time to time to check in as well.

Walls fall on the Southside

Today demolition crews started tearing down the former homes of Jim Reed Books, Scott’s Koneys, FedEx/Kinko’s and the Birmingham Water Works to allow for construction to begin for the highly anticipated Block 121 development. The project, being developed by Corporate Realty Development and Inland American Communities Group is slated to include retail space and 258 rental units. The last tenant on the block, Express Oil Change, moved to its new location on University Blvd. earlier this year, while Scott’s Koney’s and FedEx/Kinko’s moved nearly a year ago.

Economic synergy focus for summit

Next week’s Economic Summit, presented by the City of Birmingham‘s economic development committee, hopes to provide the area’s public, private and non-profit leaders with the tools necessary to guide the Magic City region through the current economic crisis. The event is free and open to the public and will include keynote speeches by John Sibley Butler, Ph.D., director of The Kelleher Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Texas at Austin and Kim M. Williams, Ph.D., associate professor of public policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Here’s a current copy of the agenda for you to look over as a JPEG; if you’re interested in attending, visit the Birmingham Business Resource Center’s website and click on the register link.

The Weekly’s going to be fine

There are only a few of us that even knew that Creative Loafing, Inc. was a minority owner of one of our local alternatives, Birmingham Weekly, before Tuesday’s report in the Birmingham Business Journal. While “The Loaf” prepares to go through (and hopefully successfully emerge from) Chapter 11 bankruptcy, The Weekly let us know that it’s going to be business as usual and that it should not be affected. If they follow the lead of CL though, we’ll begin to see a migration to an online product in the near future.

SmartCars arrive in metro Birmingham

SmartCar invasion begins

If you haven’t seen a SmartCar yet (the one above was on Morris Avenue about a month ago), be prepared to see many more in the coming months and years cruising around town. The car first made an appearance in town last year as part of a cross-country promotional tour. Now, one of the 72 SmartCar dealerships in the country is located in Hoover. They received one of their first car shipments about two weeks ago (I didn’t have a camera – doh). Anyone out there own one of these yet?

Checking out o kafé’s new digs

The banner says it all, though it did look open. Their relatively new location in Pepper Place allows folks that buy coffee from them during farmers market season to have somewhere to hang out the rest of the year. Looks like they’re already booking acts too, as the poster said there was a show set for August 24. It may be an excuse to check it out.
