Parkside’s closing

We figured it was our duty to share news of a great sale, though the reason for it is a sad one. Parkside Home & Garden, operating across the street from Avondale Park since 2000, has decided to close its doors. The building is currently available for sale or lease. Based on the sign that was up in the front door window this week all items are 60% off. We’re thinking that you need to head on over there. Or at least think about checking out the store in Mobile if you start to get sentimental (it opened back in April)…

It was a good idea

I’m heading to my Friday morning meeting with Whitney and I noticed an interesting site:

After checking with the crew, they confirmed my worst fears. It seems that the New Vulcan Ale House won’t be opening after all. No official word on what actually happened though we’re sure that folks around town will be quite upset by this development. You may want to check out their MySpace profile for more information.

Just dial up to find lighter traffic, cheaper gas

Some local Verizon Wireless customers have already noticed that they’ve got a couple of new features on their phone. The company announced recently that it would roll out its new Verizon Wireless VZ Navigator service in 75 cities, including Birmingham. It now provides another service for area residents to go along with Commuter Feed, which we wrote about back in February.

Drivers with access to the service will be able to view how traffic is flowing, and receive details about reported accidents, disabled vehicles and congestion along with suggestions for detours. The Gas Finder feature allows drivers to locate gas stations nearby and view gas prices at many area gas stations, providing turn-by-turn directions as needed… Now if the car could only drive itself it’d be perfect!

Random Shots: A new location for FedEx/Kinko’s

New Fed Ex location downtown

There may be a few folks that are wondering where their downtown FedEx Kinko’s store is? Well, it’s just opened this morning at 312 20th Street North in Birmingham’s city center. For those new to the situation, they were the last tenants on the block that’s been slated for redevelopment by Corporate Realty as apartments.

Their former neighbors have all found new locations in the greater downtown area as well, including Reed Books on 2nd Avenue North, Scott’s Koneys (now on 21st Street South). And yes, we’d argue that the new payment center for the Birmingham Water Works on 1st Avenue North is at least pretty close to downtown (it’s even got drive-thru lanes).
