Lend a hand to the homeless this weekend

Hands on Birmingham is still looking for volunteers to help with this Saturday’s Project Homeless Connect at Boutwell Auditorium.

From their website: “On Saturday, April 5, approximately 500 volunteers, public servants, non-profit agencies, faith-based organizations and citizens will assemble under one roof to help people who are homeless in our community through Project Homeless Connect. This innovative one-day event is about breaking the cycle of homelessness, increasing access to services and ending chronic homelessness in Central Alabama. … Be a part of Birmingham’s solution to homelessness.”

People attending the event from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be offered a variety of services from help with housing and employment to pet care and haircuts.

Workers remove old cobblestones along Powell Avenue in preparations for the construction of the Railroad Reservation Park. The park is scheduled to take about a year to complete. The stones will be stored and used in the park. The park is one of three that will be focused on during Thursday afternoon’s annual meeting of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham being held at B&A Warehouse (directly across the street from the bulldozer activity downtown). There will also be an announcement about the foundation’s latest initiative.

I’ll buy a vowel…

I came across this while looking around the Crestwood North Yahoo Group yesterday…

“… Jana Harris, Ramsay [High School] graduate and a native of Birmingham, will be on Wheel of Fortune tomorrow night, April 1, 2008. I told her all those puzzles we did in class would help her in the real world one day…”

Check it out if you can tonight…

Looks like we got two right…

City Stages formally announced part of their 2008 lineup via The Birmingham News as a front page article in Sunday’s (today’s) paper. This list includes a couple of big names – like Diana Ross and The Flaming Lips.

Looks like we were correct in identifying two of this year’s acts , The Roots (March 18) and Old Crow Medicine Show (yesterday). The News was able to figure out a couple of them as well (and a lot earlier than we were – see the Old Crow post to find links to those posts).
